Kevätkeeppi / Bouquet capelet

Neuloin muutama vuosi sitten mohairvillapaidan, johon en ollut tyytyväinen, joten purin paidan, säilytin virkatut kukat ja käytin langat uudelleen kaksinkertaisena tähän keeppiin. Vihreät reunat ja kiinnitysnaru on uudella langalla. Puikkokoko 4.5 mm, 5 mm sekä 6 mm. Tulos on hieman parempi, mutta edelleen virkatut kukat on lepiasiani ja beige on vähän blääh.

I made a mohair sweater in 2015, but wasn't happy with it, so I took it apart, kept the flowers and knitted a capelet with the yarn held double. The green yarn is new. I started from the neck on 4.5 mm needle, switched to 5 mm and 6  mm around the shoulders. It's bit better now, I like the flowers most, but not just sure where and how to use the.

Raitaneulepaidat / Vintage chevron sweaters

Neuloin tämän villapaidan Falling Stars Top Down Sweater -ilmaisohjeella ja ajattelin epämääräisesti sweater girl -tyylin kulta-aikaa 1950-lukua. Siksak-raitapaitoja löytyy kuitenkin kotimaisista neulelehdistä vuosilta 1953 ja 1972 sekä keskellä olevasta Vintage Knits -kirjasta vuodelta 2005, eli tyyli on aika ajaton.

This sweater is knitted with a free pattern called Falling Stars Top Down Sweater by Elaine Phillips. I aimed for the quintessentially 50s sweater girl look, but the chevron sweater is actually quite timeless. The Finnish magazines left and right are from 1953 and 1972, and the Rowan book Vintage Knits is from 2005, and all these have chevron sweaters.

Valkokankaalla vintage-henkisiä neuleita näkee esimerkiksi televisiosarjoissa Kotiin takaisin ja Sex Education sekä elokuvassa Kaiken teoria. Ilmaisia neuleohjeita löytyy englanniksi esimerkiksi brittiläisestä sota-ajan Home Notes -lehtisestä, jonka Victoria & Albert -museo tarjoaa netissä ilmaiseksi. Alaoikealla oleva vahvemmalle langalle ja isommalle puikkokoolle muokatun Clara-neuleen on suunnitellut Rohn Strong.

On screen chevron sweaters can be admired in tv shows A Place to Call Home and Sex Education. Film The Theory of Everything has a cute retro chevron cardigan too. Victoria & Albert museum from UK offers the original WWII Home Notes pattern for free on their website. The lovely Clara sweater on bottom right corner is by Rohn Strong, and it has the Victory sweater look, but it is a quicker knit, done on larger needles and thicker yarn.

Viitat valkokankaalla / Cape inspiration

I dressed up in primary colours for a bike ride inspired by an outfit challenge. Wearing my diy cape-coat I realised that capes are on the list of the things I always spot, and admire, on screen. I don't really watch superheroes in capes, but tend to seek more tender heroines, though Mary Poppins is stern, and she flies. Here are some of my favourite cape-wearers, and a couple of free vintage knitting patterns for making a cape-coat at home.

Pitsikauluri / Amphora cowl

Kauluri on Malabrigon Rios-langasta neulottu Amphora-ohjeella, joka on Skeinwalker Knits -nimimerkkiseltä suunnittelijalta. Neuloin sen pyöröneuleen sijasta tasona ja lisäsin nappirivin reunaan, joten sitä voi pitää auki tai kiinni. Napit Etsystä yhdeksän kappaleen pussissa, joista käytin kahdeksan. Puikkokoko 4 mm.

This cowl is knitted with pattern called Amphora by Skeinwalker Knits. I knitted it flat instead of in-the-round and added buttons, so that the cowl can be worn open or closed. The buttons are from Etsy. Needle size was 4 mm.

Kevätpipo / Leafy beanie

Jokin aika sitten tekemäni paidan jämälangoista neuloin pipon Catherine Waterfieldin Golden Birch Beanie -ohjetta muokaten. Vaaleanvihreä lanka on Dropsin Merino Extra Fine -villaa ja monivärinen lanka on Malabrigon Rios-merinovillalankaa. Puikkokoko 3.5 mm.

I had leaft-over yarns from a sweater project, so I cast-on a hat with the multicoloured Malabrigo Rios yarn and green Drops Merino Extra Fine. The hat pattern is slightly modified from Golden Birch Beanie by Catherine Waterfield. Needle size 3.5 mm.

Huovutetut lehdet / Felted leaves

Vasemmalla olevan huovutetun silkki-villasekoitteisen huivin tein äidilleni lahjaksi muutama vuosi sitten. Hän toivoi huovutettua lehtiköynnöstä, joten improvisoin oikealla olevan neuleen hänelle ja siihen meni pari iltaa. Neuloin ensin putken ja lisäsin siihen neulelehtiä täysvillaisesta Novitan Puro-langasta 4 mm puikoilla. Sitten laitoin kaiken pesukoneeseen, jossa se huopui.

The felted silk-wool shawl on the right is made for my mom couple years ago, and she requested a felted vine and so I made the leaves the right. I knitted an i-cord tube on 4 mm needles and then added knitted leaves onto it. When I was done I put the whole thing in the washing machine amongst the laundry in a mesh bag and there it felted.

Kasariromantiikkaa / 80s knitspiration

Kirjastossa vastaan tuli Susan Duckworthin Ihanat kukkaneuleet. En ollut kuullut suunnittelijasta aikaisemmin, mutta neuleet ovat kauniita ja kirja näyttää kasarin tyylikkään ja romanttisen puolen. Alkuteos ilmestyi englanniksi 1988 ja suomeksi ysärin puolella 1991.

I like to rummage though the knitting book section in the library to find hidden gems. This beautiful book by Susan Duckworth was published originally in 1988 with the name Knitting. I hadn't heard of the designer, but she must have been a big name in the 80s to have been translated into such a smallish language as Finnish. The book had loads of beautiful designs, and the styling and photography are top notch too.

Näiden neuleiden inspiraatio oli kuvatekstin mukaan espanjalainen kirjontatekniikkaa 1600-luvulta. Siinä valkoiselle kankaalle kirjottiin mustia kuvioita.
These knits were inspired by an embroidery technique of using black thread on white fabric that was popular in Spain in the 1600s.

Latvialaiset lapaset / Mittens around the world - Latvia

Nämä lapaset on neulottu perinteistä latvialaista lapasohjetta muokaten 1.5 mm puikoilla latvialaisesta sinisestä liukuvärjätystä Dundaga-langasta ja suomalaisista valkoisesta ja harmaasta langasta. Nimen Graph 53 saanut ohje löytyi kirjasta Latvian mittens - Latviešu cimdi, jonka on koonnut ja kirjoittanut Lizbeth Upitis latvilaisista ohjeista Yhdysvalloissa vuonna 1981. Latvialaiset perinteet ovat eläneet niin omassa maassa kuin siirtolaistenkin mukana. Lapasilla on ollut iso rooli hääseremonioissa Latviassa on kirjan mukaan. Kapioarkkuja koottiin ja lapasia lahjoitettiin seremoniallisesti. Luultavasti siksi hellästi pideltyjä kauniita lapasia on säilynyt ja niitä on voitu kopioida ohjeiksi modernien neulojien iloksi.

These mittens are a modification of a traditional Latvian mitten pattern that has been published with the name Graph 53 in a book Latvian mittens - Latviešu cimdi by Lizbeth Upitis. The book was first published in 1981 in the US, as Latvia had limited freedoms at the time under the iron rule of USSR. Latvian mitten traditions were kept alive in Latvia and by emigrants, and many fabulous books have been published with the beautiful patterns originating from this Mecca of mittens by the Baltic sea. For a small country different regions have had their own styles and symbols and colours. But some features, such as symmetry and ornamention, can be found in all of the traditional patterns. In the marriage ceremony mittens played a part too, and mittens were given as gifts. My mittens are made with gradiating blue Latvian Dundaga wool and the white and grey are Finnish yarns. Needle size is 1.5 mm.

Snøfrost villapaita / Snøfrost jumper

Testineuloin tämän Snøfrost-villapaitaohjeen, jonka on suunnitellut ThePetiteKnitter. Tein paitani koossa M ja lankoina käytin valkoista Pirtin Kehräämön Villasilkkilankaa ja punertavaa on Kehrättären Lieko-lankaa. Punaista kului kaksi vyyhtiä ja valkoista vajaa yksi. Puikkokoko 3.5 mm ja 4 mm. Paitaohjeen sain vastineeksi testineulonnasta ja siihen sopivan hatun ohjeen ostin itse. Olen testannut pari ohjetta aiemminkin ja on mukava auttaa suunnittelijoita kokeilemalla heidän ohjettaan ja selvittämällä löytyykö siitä epäselvyyksiä. Tämä paita oli sopiva yhdistelmä keskittymistä vaativaa kirjoneuletta ja rennompaa yksiväristä hihojen neulontaa.

I test-knitted the Snøfrost jumper pattern by ThePetiteKnitter. This is knitted in size M. The yarns I used are Finnish. The white yarn is called Villasilkkilanka and consists of 50% Finnish sheep wool and 50% recycled silk. The red yarn is called Lieko and it is 100% Finnish wool. Needle size is 3.5 mm and 4 mm. I purchased the matching Snøfrost hat, and the sweater pattern I got in exchange for testing the pattern. I've test-knitted a couple of times before and it is nice to be part of the process and try something new and see if I understand the instructions. This pattern had a nice mix of stranded knitting and plain stockinette. Stranded colourwork requires concentration, and stockinette that is more of a smooth sailing. Pattern testing helps also to see how the same pattern looks in different colour combinations. I chose colours quite close to the designer's sample picture, as I liked them so much, but this would look cool in blue too.
