Asukuu / What I wore in Me-Made-May 2021

Tänään Me-Made-Mayn viimeisenä yllä oli muun muassa kirppishousut, lahjasukat ja tuunatut kengät.

On the last day of this Me-Made-May I wore these refashioned shoes, gifted socks and thrifted pants.

Tämän omatekoisten vaatteiden toukokuun käytetyimmät vaatteet olivat viileähkön sään ulkoiluvillasukat ja kotihuivi koleita iltoja varten.

The hero pieces of this Me-Made-May were these socks that I wear a lot for excericing in cool below 20 weather. And the shawl I wear indoors in the evenings.

Kolme ometekoista vaatetta on helppo yhdistää, kuusi menee ehkä jo vähän byoriginal-lookiksi.

On many days I wore 3 me-made items, and on some days I managed to pile on even 6 diy makes. The temperatures varied between +3 Celcius and +27 Celcius degrees.

Pappatyyli / Dress like your Grandpa

Muutaman vuoden tauon jälkeen netin kansainvälisissä ompeluseuroissa oli jälleen Dress-like-your-Grandma -ompeluhaaste. Tein tämän takin isoisääni esittävän kuvan inspiroimana. Löysin kuvan hänestä luultavasti 30-luvulla juuri ennen sotaa taskullisessa urheilutakissa. Käytin tämän ompeluun isoäitini eli kuvan paapan vaimon vanhaa ompelukonetta 1970-luvulta. Ohje löytyi kirjastosta Burda Style -lehdestä numero 11/2020. Kangas oli alelöytö 4 eurolla ja vetoketju maksoi hieman sitä enemmän noin 5 euroa. Kevyeen takkiin en lisännyt vuoria kuin taskuihin ja etuhärpäkkeisiin.

This jacket is sewn inspired by an old picture of my grandfather, whom I never met. There is Dress-like-your-Grandma sewing challenge going on, and I've sewn in previous years something inspired by my grandmothers. And I've always used the sewing machine left behind by my grandmother to do all my sewing. It's a sturdy metal machine from 1970s. This time I took a picture of my father's father, so the sewing machine's owners husband in a sports jacket. I found a similar jacket pattern from Burda Style magazine 11/2020. The fabric was a sales find for 4 euros and the zipper cost around a fiver. I lined the pockets and the front flaps, but otherwise this is a light summer jacket.

Tänään 23. omatekoisten vaatteiden toukokuuta laitoin 3 omatekoista vaatekappaletta: tuunatun 70-luvun ompelukaavalla tehdyn mekon, maskin ja hiuspannan.

For today, 23rd of Me-Made-May, I put on 3 diy makes: refashioned 1970s style dress, mask and headband.

Plaid or tartan prints, and possibly weaves, from Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Bad Times at the El Royale, WandaVision and Sex Education. The original 1950s looks at the center are from Free Vintage Knitting. Center top and bottom.

Omatekoisten vaatteiden toukokuun, eli Me-Made-Mayn, 19. päivänä yllä oli omatekoinen toppi ja tuunattu takki, joka vaikuttaa 60- tai 70-luvun tuotteelta.

On the 19th of Me-Made-May I wore a diy top and refashioned plaid jacket, that I suspect to be from 1960s or 70s.

Höyhenhuivi / Birds of a Feather shawl

Tämä neulehuivi on puoliska Andrea Mowryn Birds of a Feather -huivista, jonka on tarkoitus muistuttaa muodoltaan höyhentä. Kerällinen vaaleansinistä Drops Kid-Silk mohair-lankaa riitti puoliväliin, mutta kun se loppui jatkoin toisella langalla, ne eivät sopineetkaan yhteen, joten purin huivin puoleenväliin ja päättelin siihen. Huivi on melko iso jo näin puolena höyhenenä. Tumma lanka on Katia Winter Rainbow -villasekoitelankaa, jota kului noin puoli kerää. Puikkokoko 4 mm.

This shawl is knitted with the Birds of a Feather pattern that is designed by Andrea Mowry. I ran out of the light blue mohair yarn and continued with another yarn, but wasn't happy with the result, so I frogged back and bound off and called it a day. Tis is actually already generously sized, and can be wrapped in multitude of ways. The dark blue yarn is Katia Winter Rainbow, and light blue mohair is Drops Kid-Silk. I used 4 mm needes.

Kissakauluri koirankarvalangasta / Cat cowl in dog hair yarn

Tämä kauluri on muokattu versio Covered in Cats Cowl -ohjeesta, jonka on suunnitellut Marna Gilligan ja joka löytyy kirjasta Cat Knits. Valkoinen ja harmaa lanka ovat Ylistaron kehräämön Koirankarvalankaa, jota ostin käsityömessuilta toissa vuonna. Lanka on materiaalisekoitus, jossa on 70% kestävää lampaanvillaa ja 30% erityisen lämmittävää, harjauksen yhteydessä lemmikkien turkeista kerättyä koirankarvaa. Siksi halusinkin kauluriin napit, jotta asusteen lämmittävyyttä saa säädeltyä. Reunat viimeistelin pienellä määrällä siniharmaata Pehorka Peruvian Alpaca -lankaa. Puikot 4 mm, 4.5 mm ja 6 mm.

This cowl is a modification of the Covered in Cats Cowl by Marna Gilligan from her book Cat Knits. The white and grey wools are dog-hair-blend yarn, which consists of 70% sheep wool, and 30% dog hair that has been gathered when brushing pet dogs. I got the yarn from a craft fair two years ago from a local spinnery's booth. I finished the edges of the cowl in blue yarn, that is Pehorca Peruvian Alpaca. Needles used here are 4 mm, 4.5 mm and 6 mm. Plastic buttons are from my stash. I wanted the have the option to ventilate, as the dog yarn is supposed to be very warm, and buttons make versatile use easier.

Henkseli- ja haalarityyliä / Jumpsuits are for jumping

Tämän päivän omatekoinen vaatekappale on kirppisbleisereistä tuunattu henkselimekko. Paita, kaulakoru ja laukku on kirppislöytöjä ja loput valmisvaatteita.

Today's Me-made-May outfit included a diy dungaree-dress sewn out of thrifted blazers few years back. Blouse, necklace and bag are thrifted too, and the rest is ready-to-wear.

The pinafores are from Queen's Gambit and His Dark Materials. The practical denim dungarees at the bottom are from Tell it to the Bees and All Creatures Great and Small. The pinny dress pattern at the center can be found from Peppermint Magazine.

Kukkatakki / Asheville flower cardi

Neuloin tämän villatakin äidilleni lahjaksi. Kävimme lankakaupassa muutama viikko sitten ja hän ihastui kukalta näyttäviä lankanyppylöitä sisältävään Alize Maxi Flower lankaan. Ostin ja käytin noin kuusi kerää lankaa, 10 mm puikkoja ja Asheville -ilmaisohjetta ja tuloksena syntyi tämä neuletakki. Ohjetta on muokattu hieman, sillä The Noble Thread -nimimerkin suunnitteleman takin neuletiheys oli hieman eri. Kaulus ja hihat poikkeavat ohjeesta myös.

I made this cropped cardigan as Mother's day gift for my mom. We went yarn shopping couple weeks ago and she admired this Alize Maxi Flower yarn that had sort of flower buds in it. I offered to knit a cardi for her. If she knit it herself it would take signifigantly longer, as she is not as eager knitter as me. I used 10 mm needles and almost 6 skeins of yarn. The circular needle broke while knitting this as the yarn is bit heavy. But result looks nice. I used Asheville pattern by The Noble Thread as starting point, but made many modifications, including cropped sleeves and smaller collar.

Villakangastakkeja / Groovy vintage-style coats

 

Me-Made-May eli omatekoisten vaatteiden teemakuukausi on taas meneillään. Tänään minulla oli ylläni neljä omatekoista vaatekappaletta: maski, raitahuivi teinivuosilta, tuunattu viittatakki ja lapaset. Poolo ja housut on kirppisostoksia ja loput valmisvaatteita.

It's Me-Made-May again and today I wore four diy items: a cape-coat, mittens, mask and a sripey scarf that is from teenage years and knitted in the hope of stepping on the Hogwarts Express. The grey turtleneck and trousers are thrifted, and the accessories like hat and shoes are ready-to-wear.

1900-luvun puolivälin takkityylejä elokuvista Brooklyn, Maija Poppasen paluu ja The Aftermath sekä Marple-sarjan jaksosta Paddingtoista 16:50. Keskellä ilmaisohjeet klassisiin takkeihin, jotka löytyvät englanniksi Mood Fabrics -sivustolta. Ylempi trenssi ja alempi villakangastakki.

Coats from Brooklyn, Mary Poppins Returns, The Aftermath and Agatha Christie's Marple represent classic styles from 1930s to early 1960s. The coat patterns at the center, and tutorials for them, can be found for free from Mood Fabrics. Trench coat on top and camel wool coat at the bottom.

Pari päivää sitten, kolmantena päivänä toukokuuta, käytin viittä omatekoista vaatekappaletta: kasvomaskia, huivia, takkia, lapasia ja sukkia. Villakankaisen seilorihenkisen takin neuloin isoäitiäni esittävän valokuvan inspiroimana. Tänä vuonna kyseinen Dress-like-your-Grandma ompeluhaaste järjestetään parin vuoden tauon jälkeen uudelleen ja ajattelin ommella jälleen takin, mutta nyt isoisäni tyylin ja häntä esittävän valokuvan inspiroimana.

On the 3rd of Me-Made-May I wore five diy items: mask, scarf,  coat, mittens and wool socks. Wool coat is sewn inspired by an old picture of my grandma where she is wearing a sort of a sailor outfit. This year the Dress-like-your-Grandma sewing challenge takes place again. I'm planning to sew another coat, but this time inspired by my grandpa.

Villahuiveja vintagetyyliä virvoittavista kirjoista Shetlannin pitsit ja Outlander Knitting sekä alla 1960-luvun neulehuivityyliä Eevan Käsityöt -lehdestä.

Shawls in classic Scottish-inspired styles from the books The Magic of Shetland Lace Knitting and Outlander Knitting. The red 1960s a wool shawl was styled as a head scarf in Finnish magazine Eevan Käsityöt.

Huivityyliä Pikku naisia -elokuvasta ja Outlander - Matkantekijä -sarjasta. Keskellä saaliohjeet vuodelta 1912. Ylempi ohje ja alempi ovat saatavilla ilmaiseksi englanniksi ja linkki niiden ohjeisiin löytyy Ravelrystä.

Here's some vintage-shawl inspiration. Both in Little Women and Outlander the shawls are worn wrapped close to the body. The same style can be seen in the textured shawl pattern from 1912 on top. Link to the other antique  pattern at the center can be found via Ravelry too.
