These socks made for the gift-pile are a modification of Citrus Socks by Aud Bergo. I used 2.5 mm knitting needles and fingering-weight sock yarns.

Ginghamruutuja / Gingham style

Tämä haalari tarttui mukaan kympillä mallikappaleiden myynnistä. Olin harknnut kesäpotkupuvun ompelua, joten materiaalikustannukset huomioiden tämä valmisvaatehaalari oli löytö. This gingham jumpsuit was found on a sample sale for a tenner. I had planned sewing some dungarees, but considering the material cost of the fabric, I thought this was a find. Gingham has quite girly aura, but it's also used in sturdy picnic blankets or restaurant tablecloths. And thanks to new Barbie film, girly gingham is hip right now. I wasn't a Barbie girl, as my parents wouldn't buy me many plastic toys, but I got one as a gift from my mom's German pen pal. Contrary to Barbie figure, my style ideals were formed, and possibly damaged by classic Hollywood films and fashion magazines read as a teenager.

In 1988 fashionable knitwear hues seemed to be either bright or pastel, and knits were worn with acid wash jeans and high-tops. And in this Finnish magazine kids were dressed as either sailors or chefs, and they were on the phone constantly.

Sitruunaviipaletoppi / Limonata top

Tämä toppi on virkattu Ana D:n Limonata-ohjeella, joka löytyy Pom Pom Quarterly -lehden numerosta 45. Malli oli lehden kannessa ja ostin sen juuri tämän kesäisen sitruunaviipaleita muistuttavan virkkuuohjeen takia. Käytin lankoina puuvillakeriä, joita minulla jo oli. Olin ostanut toista tarkoitusta varten Katian Ombré Cotton värisetin sekä yksittäisiä keriä Novita Cotton Softia ja Scheepjes Catonaa, joista muodostui topin liukuväriefekti. Muokkasin muotoa ja tein topistani lyhythihaisen verrattuna alkuperäisohjeeseen. Virkkuukoukun koko oli 3.5 mm.

This top is made with Limonata pattern that is by designer Ana D. The pattern has been published in Pom Pom Quarterly number 45. I had the crochet pieces as my road trip make, and after figuring out one slice of lemon I could start a production line. It took longer than expected, so last weekend I wanted to be done, and made almost half of the crochet slices and attached them together. I didn't follow the long-sleeve construction of the pattern, but made a short-sleeved top instead. I used 3.5 mm crochet hook, and the yarns are one set of Katia Ombré Cotton, and one skein of Novita Cotton sof and Scheepjes Catona each in matching colours. My top is more of lemons and oranges due to the gradient yarn balls.

The dress and scarf are 2nd hand finds, the braclet is from a Tanzanian crafts market, and shoes are bought from ready-to-wear store.

Sadepaikka / Rainbow mini-reno

Valmisvaateneulostakissa oli reikä, jonka peittämiseksi otin innoitusta Erin Eggenburgin Paikkauksen parhaat palat -kirjasta. Leikkasin askarteluhuovasta sateenkaarta muistuttavan palan ja tein siihen yksinkertaista viivakirjontaa useilla väreillä. Harsin paikan reiän päälle ja nyt tämä arkitakki, jota käytän usein välikerroksena esimerkiksi ruohoa leikatessa, on entistä ehompi.

This ready-to-wear cardigan was bought years ago for a fiver, and after many years of use I have degraded it into use in everyday puttering around, as it has faded a bit. A hole had also appeared in the cardi, and I decided to mend it. As inspiration I used a book called The Mending Directory by Erin Eggenburg. I cut a piece of fleece and embroidered rainbow on it. Then I stiched the patch over the hole. And now the cardi is renewed.

I got an old Kodak Brownie as an addition to my camera collection from antique street market. Here posing with it in DIY kitenge-cotton dress, craft-fair-find armband and ready-to-wear accessories.

Neuletyyliä 1940-luvulta / 1940s knits

Kirpputorilta löytyi tämä 1947 julkaistu ruotsalainen neulekirja Henriette Ernemarkin Iduns stickbok. Sisäsivuilla on tyylikkäitä ja yksinkertaisia neulemalleja. Vasemmalla myös 1960-luvun ompelukaavoja, jotka on löytyneet kirppareilta niin ikään eurolla kappale.

I got a Swedish knitting book called Iduns stickbok by Henriette Ernemark from thrift store. On the pages of the book there are simple and elegant 1940s patterns. Here on the left there are also some circa 1960s sewing patterns gotten 2nd hand too.

Kotelomekkoja / Sheath dresses

Tämä kotelomekko on tansanialaisen ompelijan tekemä. Ostin joltain Dar es Salaamin toreista tätä kitenge-kangasta, joka on mielestäni eräs hauskimmista ikinä näkemistäni printeistä, ja menin sen kanssa ompelijalle, joka otti mittani ja teki minulle tämän mekon. Ostin lisäksi samaa puuvillapainokangasta kotiinviemisiksi, joten minulla on varasto myös omia tulevia projekteja varten.

This dress is tailormade for me by a Dar es Salaam seamstress. I got the delightful fabric from a street market, marched into a small shop with it, the tailor took my measurements and maybe a week later I got a made-to-measure dress. The fabric is one of the best I think I've ever seen, so I bought some as souvenir too, and have treasured it and kept for future special projects.

Kukkapalmikkolapaset / Handy bouquet

Nämä lapaset on neulottu Enikö Baloghin Kriikuna-ohjeella, joka on julkaistu Taito joulun neulelehti 4:ssä. Lankoina palmikkoihin on paksumpia sukkalankoja ja vähän mohairsekoitetta. Puikkokokona 3.5 mm. Kukat on kirjottu jälkikäteen kärkiin ohuemmilla sukkalangoilla.

These mittens are made with a pattern called Kriikuna by Enikö Balogh. The pattern seems to be available only in Finnish in a magazine format. I used thicker sock yarns for the main mitten, and thinner sock yarns to embroider the flowers. Knitting needle size was 3.5 mm.

Kangaskokoelmahame / Fabric sampler skirt

Minulla on jäännöspaloja aiemmista ompeluprojekteista ja tähän hameeseen käytin pääasiassa tansanialaisia kitenge-puuvillaprinttien paloja ja lisäksi yhtä kotimaasta hankittua kukkakirjottua kangasta. Valikoin säilömistäni jämäpaloista vihreitä ja ruskeita kankaita, jotta väriyhdistelmä olisi yhtenäinen. Tutoriaali palkkiraitahameeseen löytyy japanilaisesta Kokka-fabric-blogista. Ohje on japaniksi, joten käytin enimmäkseen vain ohjekuvia inspiraationa. Mittasin jo vaatekaapissani olevan sopivan A-linjaisen kellottavan hameen vyötärön ja helman ja jaoin luvun kuudella ja sitten leikkasin melko vapaalla kädellä kuusi palaa, jotka ompelin saumurilla yhteen. Vyötäröllä on kuminauhakuja ja helman sisäkäänteessä on nauhaa, joka toivottavasti auttaa helmaa kellottumaan.

I have couple of bags of left-over fabrics from previous sewing projects and I decided to make a scrappy skirt out of them. I was inspired by pattern photos from Japanese Kokka-fabric blog. I also used an existing A-line skirt as a guide and measured it for numbers to be divided by six to get an approximate size for the fabric pieces. Instead of smaller rectangular pieces of the original pattern I cut out chunkier A-lined fabric strips. Most of the print fabrics I used here are Tanzanian kitenge cottons, with the exception one piece of flower-embellished fabric that is bought from Finland. I sewed the pieces together with an overlocker and added a waistband that has elastic. The hem has sewn in a more rigid ribbon band that hopefully flares it out a bit.

The knitted collar is a DIY make. Shoes are from 2nd hand shop and the colour and unusual brand name Maire hint that they might be a 1980s product. The blouse and rest the accessories are ready-to-wear.

Paitatuunaus / Blouse refashion

Ostin tämän valmisvaatepaidan kolmella eurolla ja mietin miten saisin sen toimivammaksi itselleni. Se oli kokoa liian suuri ja hihat kaipasivat mielestäni kevennystä, vaikka värit ja röyhelöt olivatkin hurmavia. Pätkäisin siis hihat ja lisäsin vyötärölle kuminauhakujan, joka tuo paidalle enemmän muotoa.

I modified this ready-to-wear blouse gotten for 3 euros to be more my size and style. The frills and fabric were lovely, and I had eyeballed similar styles in sewing magazines already. This blouse is about a size bigger than I'd normally wear, and the sleeves felt heavy. So I chopped the sleeves off, hemmed them and also added a rubber band around the waist to give it more shape.
