Polvipaikka / March is for mending

 

Tämä polvi on paikattu jo ennen tämän blogin aloittamista, mutta nyt Mend-Marchin eli paikkaamisteemaisen maaliskuun vuoksi esittelen sen näin käytön jälkeen. Paikkaamisen tarve syntyi kun kaaduin pyörällä, jolloin näihin housuihin tuli reikiä polven seutuville. Leikkasin reiät säännöllisemmiksi tähden muotoisiksi ja ompelin alle hameen lyhennyksestä yli jäänyttä raitakangasta. Sormikkaat on paikattu myös.

These trousers have been mended even before I started blogging, but I´ll introduce the project here now, as it is Mend-March. The need for mending came about when I fell on bike and got holes on the trousers around the knees. I decided to cut the holes bigger and to star-shape. Then I placed a fabric underneath that was stitched in place. The fabric is left-overs from a skirt-refashion project. And here's the mended knee. And my gloves have gotten the mending-treatment too.

Kellohatut / Cloche hats

Hattuja sarjoista Babylon Berlin ja Draken etsivätoimisto sekä elokuvista Kesämaa ja Vita & Virginia. Päänmyötäiset pienet kellohatut ovat keskeistä 1920- ja 30-lukujen tyyliä, jota edustaa myös Ravelrystä löytyvä kuva keskellä.

Cloches are quitessential 1920s and 1930s style. Examples of close-fitting, helmet-like and bell-shaped hats from Babylon Berlin, Summerland, Vita & Virginia and Frankie Drake Mysteries. The 1930s look at the center is via Ravelry.

Pilvipaita / Tulip pullover

 Tämä villapaita on neulottu Melody Hoffmannin Tulip-ohjeella, jonka juju on piparkakkureunainen helma. Lisäsin röyhelöt myös kaula-aukkoon ja lisäksi pyrin liukuväriefektiin käyttämällä erisävyisiä sinisiä lankoja yhdessä. Koko paitaan käytin Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk -lankaa ja yläosaan lisäksi Schachenmayr Alpaca Cloud -lankaa ja alaosaan Novita Tuuli-mohairsekoitelankaa. Puikot 4 mm ja 4.5 mm.

This sweater is knitted with Tulip pattern that is by Melody Hoffmann. The scalloped hem is the focus of the simple raglan sweater, and I added scallops also to the neckline. I also attempted to get a gradient effect by marling different blue and teal yarns together. The yarn running through all the way is Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk. On top I marled it with Schachenmayr Alpaca Cloud and on bottom the blend is with Novita Tuuli. Needles used for this were 4 mm and 4.5 mm.

The beanie is DIY, mittens are found at home and are probably granny's old, skirt is made Tanzanian seamstress from kitenge cotton print, and rest of the accessories are ready-to-wear.

Kantapaikka / Patch on sock heel

Näihin muutama vuosi sitten tehtyihin kuusisukkiin ilmestyi reikä kantapäähän. Ajattelin ensin kirjoa tai neuloa päälle kuusen muotoisen paikan, mutta koska reikä oli ympyriäinen, pyöreä paikka sopi tilanteeseen parhaiten. Neuloin ympyrän, jonka parsin paikalleen ja nyt toivottavasti sukat kestävät taas hetken.

These socks knitted with O Dennenboom pattern were on heavy rotation in December and I noticed a hole had appeared on one of the sock heels. At first I attempted to make a tree-shaped patch, but a circle seemed to give better cover, so I sewed the small circle in place, and hopefully now the socks last a while again.

Mummon käsityöt / Granny's greatest hits

Edesmenneen mummun käsitöitä edustaa esimerkiksi tämä klassinen kaarrokeneulepaita ja kesken jäänyt virkattu peitto. Kuviovirkkaus oli mummun juttu, jonka parissa muistan hänet puuhailemassa, mutta myös muut käsityölajit sujuivat, vaikkeivat ne ehkä olleet samanlainen intohimon kohde.

These are some of my late grandmother's handiwork. The sweater is a classic yoked pullover, and this could be from any of the decades of the latter part of 1900s. Grandma was most into filet-crochet, which I remember her working on often. Filet-crochet is a technique where often geometric shapes are crocheted on fairly small hook by following charts. It requires concentration, but it is also repetitive and thus allows you get into happy crafter's zone.

 

Tämä pitsikankaasta ommeltu paita on myös isoäidin vanha ja voisi olla tyylin perusteella esimerkiksi 1950- tai 1960-luvulta, tosin vanhemmiten muotitrendejä ehkä seurataan vähemmän ja pysytellään itselle löydetyttä tyylissä ja lempivaatteissa, sitä paitsi klassisen pitsipuseron voi vetää ylleen aina.

This blouse sewn out of broderie anglaise fabric is granny's, and the shape hints 1950s or early 60s, but a prim country bumpkin and occasional Sunday school teacher living in Finland could wear this any decade, so it is hard to say when it was made, but it definitely has few decades of patina.

Äidin käsitöitä / Mom's makings

Tässä joitain äidin tekemiä käsitöitä. Niin neulominen, eli kutominen, kuin ompelu ja kirjontakin sujuvat, mutta hän on enemmän kausittainen projekti-ihminen kuin jatkuva väkertäjä. Villasukat on muutaman vuoden takaa ja improvioitu valikoimalla kuvio jostain kirjasta ja soveltamalla sukat kuvion ympärille. Ommeltu joulukalenteri on jämäkankaista ommeltu ja kirjailtu. Mekon äitini ompeli itselleen 1970-luvulla ja keltaiset verhot myös, ja hän onneksi säästi ne, vaikka moni omatekeoinen vaate on toki käytetty loppuun eikä ole säilynyt nykypäivään.

Some of my mom's makings and handiwork. She knows how to do most crafts like knitting, sewing and crochet, as she grew up in a time and place where buying things from store wasn't as easy as it nowadays. For example as a teenager she cut her uncle's old wool coat up and made a new smaller coat for herdelf out of it. The flower-patterned socks here are knitted by her few years ago. She just picked a pattern from a stitch dictionary and improvised the shape. The sewn Advent calendar unerneath is a great idea and my childhood favourite, and it includes machine sewing and embroidery by hand. And the fabrics used for the calendar were scraps from this and that. And the groovy dress and curtain in funky fabrics are sewn in the 1970s.
