Vintage-boleroista / Boleros and bed jackets

Tämä neulontaa ja virkkausta yhdistävä nuttu on isoäitini vanha ja hyvin samankaltainen kuin ohjeessa, joka löytyy Suuri Käsityökerho -lehdestä vuodelta 1976.

This cardigan shrug is my late grandmother's, and very similar to the pattern seen in this 1970s knitting magazine. It combines knitting and crochet and is fairly simple in its construction, where crochet lace is attached to a knitted rectangular piece.

Fashionable knitting and crochet patterns from magazines from 1950s, 1960s and 1970s and from the book Vintage Crochet by Susan Cropper. These shrugs seemed to be part of essential wardrobe for mid-1900s living, as patterns for bed jackets are published in most craft magazines of the period that I've leafed through.

Mummon käsityöt / Granny's greatest hits

Edesmenneen mummun käsitöitä edustaa esimerkiksi tämä klassinen kaarrokeneulepaita ja kesken jäänyt virkattu peitto. Kuviovirkkaus oli mummun juttu, jonka parissa muistan hänet puuhailemassa, mutta myös muut käsityölajit sujuivat, vaikkeivat ne ehkä olleet samanlainen intohimon kohde.

These are some of my late grandmother's handiwork. The sweater is a classic yoked pullover, and this could be from any of the decades of the latter part of 1900s. Grandma was most into filet-crochet, which I remember her working on often. Filet-crochet is a technique where often geometric shapes are crocheted on fairly small hook by following charts. It requires concentration, but it is also repetitive and thus allows you get into happy crafter's zone.

 

Tämä pitsikankaasta ommeltu paita on myös isoäidin vanha ja voisi olla tyylin perusteella esimerkiksi 1950- tai 1960-luvulta, tosin vanhemmiten muotitrendejä ehkä seurataan vähemmän ja pysytellään itselle löydetyttä tyylissä ja lempivaatteissa, sitä paitsi klassisen pitsipuseron voi vetää ylleen aina.

This blouse sewn out of broderie anglaise fabric is granny's, and the shape hints 1950s or early 60s, but a prim country bumpkin and occasional Sunday school teacher living in Finland could wear this any decade, so it is hard to say when it was made, but it definitely has few decades of patina.

Tässä kaarrokeneuleita vaatekaapistani. Alhaalla oleva perinteinen kirjoneulekaarroke on isoäitini tekemä ja yläoikealla oleva on purkulistallani, sillä teininä ostin budjettini rajoissa kerän pari kerrallaan ja siksi eri värjäyserien värisen erot näkyvät outoina raitoina valmiissa neuleessa.

Traditional colourwork sweater with classic yoke at the bottom is made by my granny, and two others are me-mades. The cable pullover on top right is on my unravel-and-reuse-the-yarn list, as I made it as teenager and bought yarns one skein at a time, and therefore the yarns are from different dye-lots and have sightly different shades.

Kansallispukutuuletus / Tracing the traditions

Havahruun kansallispuvun syntymäpäivähän elikkä tuuletuspäivähän vasta ehtoommalla, joten vetääsin ylleni oman versioni. Paita on lyhythihaanen Korsnäsin paita, jonka kuroon ja virkkasin kovalla vaivalla aikaasemmin tänä vuonna. Hames on joko mummun flammuraitaanen kansallispuvun hames tai jonkun sen sisaren vanha tanttu.

Today is the 135th birthday of the Finnish national costume. I'm wearing my granny's old skirt which is part of the costume of her hometown. The sweater is my diy version of the traditional knitted and crocheted Korsnäs sweater that I made earlier this year.

Korsnäsin t-paita / Korsnäströjan light

Ilimaasen itteäni taas vaihteheksi näin äirinkielelläni. Niin notta valamistakaa ittennä. Tässon ny korsneesiläänen paita tällääsenä nuukan pohojalaasen lankaa säästävänä lyhyenä mallina.

Jotta napa vähä vilikkuu ja naapuriilla on mille nauraa. Monasti ajatellahan notta piree on paree, mutta kyllä lyhee on kivee.

Rasat tein tosiaan puolitoista vuotta sitte vähä kurontaa ja virkkuuta harjootellen Korsnäsin tyylihin, tai Korsneesin kuten se täällä äännetähän. Nyt innostuun sitten pairan kutomisestakin.

Färit on meleko kirkkahat ja sellaaset iloluontooset, mutta kuitenki perinteeset aiva kuten Korsneesistä on tallennettu 1800-luvulta. Punaanen on veretseisauttava färi, valakoonen on sellaasen ku lampahasta tuloo ja veheriäänen vie ajatukset kesääsihin maisemihin. Niin notta oikeen sopiva yhyristelmä. Langoosta värikkähät on Pirkanmaan kotityön Ohutta Pirkka-lankaa ja valakoonen on sellaasen ku Aholan lammastilan suomenlampahistansa tekemää lankaa. Ohojoehen löysin Lankapaitoja ja muita asusteita -kirjasta, jonka on kirjoottanehet Marketta Luutonen, Anna-Maija Bäckman ja Gunnar Bäckman. Tämän ohojehen suunnittelija on Jeannette Rönnqvist-Aro. Lyhensin torellakin mallia ja valikoottin kuvioota, joista pirin eniten. Tanssivat flikat on perinteenen kuvio ja sellaasia salamiakkikuviootakin tästä ny löytyy virkkuuosiosta. Trossata voin ny sitte omatekoosella pairalla.

Korsnäströjan is a traditional sweater pattern from a small Swedish speaking community in Western Finland. Sweaters combining tapestry crochet and stranded colourwork knitting have been recorded in books since early 1800s. The sweaters are very colourful with red and white as their main colours. Religious reformation movements halted people from wearing colourful clothes in many parts of Finland in the 1800s and 1900s and many pious peole started wearing black or dark clothes in simple style, but Korsnäs was so remote that they kept many of the colourful crafts and traditions. The sweaters were worn mostly by men, but cardigan versions have been made for women. I made mittens using these techniques couple years ago and now ventured into sweater knitting in Korsnäs style. My sweater is based on Korsnäsinpaita "Tanssivät tytöt" by Jeannette Rönnqvist-Aro from a Finnish book.

The skirt is a part of regional national costume and used to belong to my grandmother or her sister. My granny had four sisters and they all had the same costume of their home town. Not all towns have their own costume, but this is one of the first ones developed into a uniform format in the 1920s. It is based on older styles of dressing. The features were taken from peasant costumes of the 1700s and 1800s.

Fiftaripanta / 50s retro earwarmer

Tämä neulepanta syntyi käyttäen neuleohjetta vuodelta 1957. Se löytyi ilmaiseksi Free Vintage Knitting -nimiseltä sivustolta. Lankana on Madame Tricot Paris'n Cashmere Gold ja puikkokoko 3 mm. Neuloin tämän onteloneuleena, jolloin etu- ja takapuoli tehdään yhtä aikaa eikä neuleella oikeastaan ole paraatipuolta ja huonompaa puolta. Panta sopii hyvin yhteen myös pari kuukautta sitten neulomieni vuosimallia 1953 olevien retrolapasten kanssa.

I made this headband using a pattern from the year 1957 to be worn with my mittens that were knitted with a 1953 pattern. The Ear Warmer pattern is available in Free Vintage Knitting and it is originally child-sized. I made it in double-knitting. This is my second time doing double-knitting and it is slower than normal knitting, but the result is very neat mand both sides are presentable. The needle size is 3 mm and yarn is Cashmere Gold by Madame Tricot Paris.

The colourwork yoke sweater is made by my grandma back when these were in fashion, so anything from 1950s to 1970s. The yarn is wool-blend of some kind that has kept it's colour well. The trousers are thrifted.

Muumilapaset / Moomin mittens

Neuloin lapaset muokkaamalla Susanna Mertsalmen Muumi-villasukkaohjetta Moomin X Novita -lehdestä, joka ilmestyi talvella. Improvisoin muodon, mutta korviin sain idean suunnitelija Shizukudon Cat mittens -ohjeesta. Raitaranneketta neuloin niin pitkään, että sain käytettyä langat käytännössä loppuun. Langat ovat edesmenneen äidinäitini, ja niitä löytyy pari laatikkoa. Lankavyötteet näyttävät 1980-luvun tuotteilta ja valkoinen on Maailman luonnon säätiön Panda-lankaa, jonka sisällysluettelo on kylläkin aika teollisen kuuloinen: villaa, polypropeenia, polyakryylia ja klorokuitua. Mutta ihan kelvolliselta sekin tuntuu. Puikot 3 mm.

I made mittens using my late grandma's yarns. They look like 1980s yarn skeins and have the colours of the Finnish flag, so I decided to participate to a flag-inspired knit-along of a Ravelry mitten group. The Moomin motif is is from Moomin Wool Socks by Susanna Mertsalmi, that was published this winter in the Moomin X Novita magazine. And the shape is improvised, though for the ears I got inspiration from Cat mittens by Shizukudo. The last bits of the yarns I used for the stripey cuffs, and I also made different sides of the mittens in different colours because I wasn't sure how long the yarn skeins would last. I used 3 mm needles.

Aikamatka-asu / Time travel with granny

Ompelin viime vuonna mekon Mrs. Hughes-blogin Dress like your Granma -haasteen innostamana. Tavoitteena on luoda oman mummon, tai muun sukulaisen, asu vaikkapa vanhan valokuvan perusteella. Selailin jälleen perhealbumeita ja isänäidistäni, jota en koskaan tavannut, on useita hauskoja kuvia roolivaatteissa harrastelijanäytelmissä 1930-40-lukujen tuntumasta. Kuvien perusteella maallakin näytelmiin panostettiin ja jopa teatterimeikkiä käytettiin. Yhdessä kuvassa nuori mummo oli merinaispuvussa, joten ompelin itselleni merihenkisen villakangastakin Burda Style -lehden 8/2017 ohjeella. Tein siihen itse kangaspäällysteiset napit. Villakangas palakorista alle 20 euroa, nauha ja napit pari euroa molemmat sekä vuorikangasta.

I made a dress inspired by my grannies last year as a part of Dress like your Grandma challenge by the blog Mrs. Hughes. I went through the family albums again and this time set my eyes on the theatre costumes worn by my grandma in the 1930s and 1940s. I never met her, but it is nice to see her having fun in amateur theatre costumes. Especially a sailor suit was chic. To achieve the look I modified a jacket pattern from the Finnish edition of Burda style 8/2017. I made fabric covered buttons. I also added white piping, hand stitched around the pockets in contrast colour and lengthened the sleeves to full length.

Retromekko / Granny takes a trip

Vastaan tuli Mrs. Hughes -blogin haaste pukeutua kuin mummo, Dress like your Grandma. Tutkailin vanhoja albumeja, joissa sekä isänäiti että äidinäiti löytyvät kuvattuina ruutumekoissa 1930-luvulla. Äiti on omatekoisessa pepitaruutuisessa mekossa 1960-luvulla ja hypnotisoitavana jälleen yhdessä ruutumekossa 1970-luvulla. Etsin kangaskaupasta hieman konservatiivisempaa ruutua, mutta hullu tilkkukangas puhutteli minua, joten ompelin sitten 1970-lukulaisen mekon. Kaava on vuodelta 1971, Simplicity 9723, joka löytyi 1,5 eurolla. Kangas maksoi noin 17 euroa ja napit on uusiokäytössä jostain purkukohteesta.
I came across a lovely challenge called Dress like your Grandma by Mrs. Hughes. I browsed though the family albums and saw both of my grandmas wearing gingham or plaid dresses in the 1930s. This seems to be common outfit for country pumpkins of various generations as my mom is pictured in a homemade plaid dress in 1960s, and then again in another checkerboard dress in 1970s (while being hypnotized. Oh, the fascinating 70s). I was looking for a conservative plaid, but came across this crazy quilt fabric that just spoke to me. So I went to the Granny-takes-a-trip direction and used my Simplicity 9723 pattern from 1971 to sew this. So, this is a loose intepretation of the granny plaid dress.

This is London is a children's book from 1959 by Czech writer and illustrator Miroslav Šašek . It has charming picures of of London of the era.

Kuuskytlukulaisittain / Swinging sixties

Inspiraationa asuun on kummisedältäni saadut englannin oppikirjat vuodelta 1963. Mekko on kirppuorilöytö Prahasta, matkalaukku isoäidin vanha.
I was inspired to dress in 60s gear by old English text books from 1963, that I got from my godfather as a gift. The dress is second hand from Prague and suitcase is my grandma's old.

 

Psyko / Psycho

Hitchcockin Psykon puvustuksessa vuodelta 1960 on nähtävissä sekä kynähameita että leveähelmaisempia hameita. Mustavalkoinen elokuva on tehokas.
Costuming in Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock from 1960 has both pencil skirts and flared skirts to be seen. All in effective black and white. 



Valkoinen pusero on äidin vanha, hame on isoäidin kotitekoinen hame luultavasti 1970-luvulta. Kengät kirpputorilta 2 eurolla.
The white blouse is mom's old, the skirt is homemade by my grandma in the 1970s. And shoes are a second hand find for two euros.

Isoäidin villatakki / Grandma's cardigan

 

Sininen neuletakki on isoäidin vanha, luultavasti 1980-luvulta. Koska hän oli minua paljon lyhyempi, jäävät hihatkin lyhyeksi, mutta takki lämmittää silti. Hattu Berliinistä, farkut itse tuunattu matkamuistomerkein.
The cardigan is my grandmother's old, most likely from the 80s. As she was shorter than me, are the sleeves short too. But still warms the mind and body. The hat is from Berlin and jeans I have modified with badges.

Sinishortsit / Denim blue renaissance

 

Kulahtaneissa äitini 1990-luvulla ompelemissa farkkuhouisissa oli hurmaava kukallinen kangas, joten se pääsi uusiokäyttöön näissä shortseissa yhdistettynä jokapoika-paidasta leikattuun kankaaseen. Ohje shortseihin Burdasta 6/2014.
I wanted fun summer shorts, but after the sewing was done concluded that these might be more for a renaissance man in a play. But they're sort of fun anyways. These are sewn from old trousers and shirt. Pattern is from Burda 6/2014.

1950-lukulaisittain / Sabrina from the Fifties

 

Mekko on muutaman euron kirpputorilöytö, jota muokkasin muun muassa lyhentämällä hihat. Hattu on kirppiskamaa ja rintaneula isotädin vanha pukukoru.
The dress is from a second hand shop for few euros. I modified the sleeves to improve it. The hat is second hand as well and brooch is great aunt's old costume jewelry.

Kengät ovat isoäidin vanhoja, laukku vintagea ja hansikkaat henkkamaukan alekorista.
The shoes are grandma's old, the bag is vintage find and the gloves are from H&M sales basket for few euros.

Grandma's old sweater gives protection from the crisp Finnish winter weather.
