Aikamatka-asu / Time travel with granny

Ompelin viime vuonna mekon Mrs. Hughes-blogin Dress like your Granma -haasteen innostamana. Tavoitteena on luoda oman mummon, tai muun sukulaisen, asu vaikkapa vanhan valokuvan perusteella. Selailin jälleen perhealbumeita ja isänäidistäni, jota en koskaan tavannut, on useita hauskoja kuvia roolivaatteissa harrastelijanäytelmissä 1930-40-lukujen tuntumasta. Kuvien perusteella maallakin näytelmiin panostettiin ja jopa teatterimeikkiä käytettiin. Yhdessä kuvassa nuori mummo oli merinaispuvussa, joten ompelin itselleni merihenkisen villakangastakin Burda Style -lehden 8/2017 ohjeella. Tein siihen itse kangaspäällysteiset napit. Villakangas palakorista alle 20 euroa, nauha ja napit pari euroa molemmat sekä vuorikangasta.

I made a dress inspired by my grannies last year as a part of Dress like your Grandma challenge by the blog Mrs. Hughes. I went through the family albums again and this time set my eyes on the theatre costumes worn by my grandma in the 1930s and 1940s. I never met her, but it is nice to see her having fun in amateur theatre costumes. Especially a sailor suit was chic. To achieve the look I modified a jacket pattern from the Finnish edition of Burda style 8/2017. I made fabric covered buttons. I also added white piping, hand stitched around the pockets in contrast colour and lengthened the sleeves to full length.

Teeveestä tuttu / Miss Lemon as inspiration

Eräässä instan ompeluyhteisön haasteessa innostettiin ompelemaan jokin asu, jonka on nähnyt valkokankaalla tai teeveessä. Itse olen jo pari vuotta suunnitellut neulovani rusettikauluksellisen Miss Lemon -villatakin, mutta sen muokkaaminen vaatii aikaa ja suunnittelua eikä onnistu kuukaudessa. Kaikki Hercule Poirot -sarjassa nähdyt asut ovat kuitenkin tyylikkäitä ja sieltä löytyy paljon muutakin kiinnostavaa. Sarjaa kuvattiin 1989-2014, mutta se sijoittuu 1930-luvulle. Lisäsin vielä eri vuosikymmenten vaikutteita muokkaamalla jakkua varten vintage-kaavaa, joka löytyi Burda Moden -lehdestä vuodelta 1965. Lisäksi harmaa college materiaalivalintana on aikalailla nykyaikaa. Sekasotku siis, mutta muistuttaa riittävästi esikuvaansa ja college on kätevä ja halpa materiaali. Miss Lemon casual siis.
In the online sewing community there are many challenges going on from which to pick inpiration from. I decided to look into Sewing the Scene, in which one can recreate an outfit from silver screen or small screen. I've been dreaming of the bow-neck-cardigan worn by Miss Lemon on the early episodes of the Agatha Christie's Poirot series (1989-2014). Knitting takes time though and I found many other thing dreamy too, including a smart grey jacket. This is more Miss-Lemon-casual as I chose a 21st Century material, college, and added a vintage pattern from 1965 into the mix. The pattern is from February 1965 Burda Moden but with heavy modifications. It looks close enough though, and is comfy to wear thanks to the casual material.

Kaikkien kannattaja / Me-Made-May finals

 

Löysin kirpputorilta ensin yhden hienon urheiluhuivin, josta en tiennyt onko se lätkää vai futista varten. Vahvat värit kuitenkin kiehtoivat ja niin olen kasannut kirpputoreilta löytämiäni fanihuiveja, joista nyt sitten ompelin yhden kaikkien lajien ja joukkueiden kannattajan takin.
For the last day of Me-Made-May I finished this jacket that has been in process for a year. At first I found one cool sports scarf in a thrift store, but since I am not a fan, I felt bit silly wearing it. But then I started to gather more scarves from second hand shops and now finally I have sewn them all together. I may not wear this to a sports bar, as this might offend some hardcore fans: hockey and football and all rivalling teams and countries in one hot mess.

Trashion tuunausta / Trashion modification

Ohje tähän neuletuunaukseen on Outi Pyyn kirjasta Trashion. Käytin kirppisostoksia ja leikkasin niitä huoletta paloiksi.
The instuction for re-using old sweaters for a new is one from a book called Trashion by Finnish Outi Pyy. I used second hand cardi and a sports scarf with accents from an old top.

Vintage-Praha / Vintage Prague

 

Pallollinen potkupuku, jakku sekä kirja ovat kirppislöytöjä Prahasta. Hattu ja poolo muutamilla euroilla kirpputoreilta Suomesta.
The polkadot pantsuit, blazer and book are all second hand finds from Prague. The turtle neck and hat are second hand purchases from Finland.

 

 

1980-lukulaisittain / Margaret from the Eighties

 

Olkatoppauksellinen jakku jäänne 1980-90-lukujen vaihteesta. Kengät kirppikseltä.
The blazer with shoulder pads is from late 80s or early 90s. Shoes are second hand.

1930-lukulaisittain / Ilsa from the Thirties

Hattu, paita ja kengät ovat kirpputorilöytöjä, hame on äidin vanha ja jakku myös. Itse asiassa tämä samettijakku oli äitini yllä vanhempieni mennessä naimisiin. Ilmeisesti 80-luvun alussa ruskea sopi häihinkin.
The hat, blouse and shoes are second hand finds. Skirt is mom's old as well as the jacket. My mom actually got married in this brown blazer. But that was the early 80s, so all is forgiven.

1930-luvulle on sijoitettu moni elokuva myöhemminkin kiitos glamourin ja dramaattisen maailmantilanteen. Casablanca on ikisuosikki.
Many films have been set to the thirties even later on thanks to the glamour and dramatic world events of the period. Casablanca is a favourite of mine.

Maastoutumista / Old camouflauge

 

Takki on ommeltu yhdistämällä vanha maastokuvioisen takki ja beessit housut. Army-takki on alun perin kirpputorilta ja housut jäänne 90-luvulta.
This jacket is a mishmash of old camouflage coat and beige curduroy pants used as new sleeves. The army coat is 2nd hand and pants are old from 1990s.

Suuret farkkujärvet / Milwaukee denim

Inspiraationa Milwaukee Wisconsinissa, joka on kuin Suomen Amerikan serkku: maataloutta, järviä ja sijainti vähän sivussa tapahtumista.
Channelling Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Wisconsin is a bit like Finland's American cousin: farms, lakes and location bit off center.




Farkkumekko ja takki kirpputoreilta, lippis lahja, kengät superalesta ja matkalaukku äidin kirppislöytö.
The denim dress and modified jacket are second hand finds, and the suitcase is my mom's 2nd hand find. The cap is a gift and shoes were on super sale.

Kotimaista / Made in Finland, mostly

Suosi suomalaista olisi hyvä periaate, mutta usein vaikeasti toteutettava monestakin syystä. Budjetti rajoittaa eikä varsinaista tarvettakaan ole, mutta silti löytöjä on hauska tehdä. Tämä Nanson jakku on edullisesti Keskisen kyläkaupasta ja alaosana on kotitekoinen isotädin vanha hame mahdollisesti 1960-70-luvuilta.
In Finland we have a phrase 'Favour Finnish', which propably originates from domestic produce propaganda. It is also a hard principle to follow, but this jacket made in Finland by Nanso. The skirt is homemade and used to belong to my great aunt around 1960s or 1970s.
