Merkkituunaus / Sweatshirt spruce up

Ostin tämän collegepuseron 2.5 eurolla saksalaisperäisen sekatavarakauppaketjun alelaarista. Tehdäkseni siitä minulle merkityksellisemmän ompelin siihen kourallisen kangasmerkkejä, joita olin keräillyt. Rusehtavat eläinkuvioiset merkit ovat euron pakkauksesta ja laserkatseisen kissamerkin olen ostanut ehkä jostain kirpparilta. Sovittelin niistä sopivan kokoelman, ompelin paikoilleen ja niin paidasta tuli persoonallisempi. 

I got this blue sweatshirt for 2.5 euros and decided to personalise it with some badges that I've collected over the years. An assortment was bought for one euro at craft shop, and the piece-de-resistance, a kitty-cat with laser-eyes, is from some 2nd hand shop, I think. I sewed them in place with sewing machine. And the now the whole sweatshirt is something that I'll recognise as my own.

The colourblock shorts are a DIY make. Sunglasses were bought from an artisan market and shoes were a sales find for around 3 euros.

Farkkujen tuunaus maalilla / Dotty denim refashion

Nämä farkut löytyivät kirpparilta 1.5 eurolla. Ne vaikuttivat vähän liian perusharmailta, joten päätin tuunata niitä maalilla. Ostin tekstiiliväriä 2.9 eurolla ja töpöttelin lyijykynän kumipäällä täpliä ympäri farkkuja, mutta hallitusti. Maalipurkin ohjeissa neuvottiin silittämään maalatut kohdat ja pesemään vaate kuvioiden säilymisen varmistamiseksi. Ja jos nämä täplät haalistuvat kovasti, minulle jäi vielä puoli purkillista tekstiiliväriä, joilla parannella tuunausta. Tällainen pienimuotoinen maalaaminen kesti kyllä yllättävän kauan, noin kolme mysteerisarjan jaksoa kului pikkuisia palloja töpötellessä.

I got these jeans from thrift store for 1.5 euros. They seemed bit too basic and grey for my taste, so I decided to refashion them with dots. One of my old favourite jeans had a dotty pattern, so I tried to make something similar with textile paint, that I got for 2.9 euros. I stamped dots with the eraserhead of a pencil to get uniform sized dots. The paint was fixed with ironing and a wash. And if the black paint fades, I still have half a bottle of paint left. I was aiming for kooky look, so I left one front leg without paint to really make a handmade statement. Overall, I'm satisfied with the result.

Muhkea hiusdonitsi / Scrappy scrunchie

Parin viikon takaisesta mekkotuunauksesta, jossa tein mekosta hameen, jäi yli vielä kangasta. Ompelin siitä tämän hiusdonitsin. Olin nähnyt jossain kukan muotoisen hiuskoristeen ja vaikka tästä tuunauksesta ei tullut ihan yhtä hienoa, toimiva hiuskoriste siitä kehteytyi kuitenkin.

I had some left-over fabric from the dress-refashion I made couple of weeks ago. I decided to sew a scrunchie out of the scrap fabric. I had seen a flower-shaped hair-tie somewhere and tried to replicate that. This soft material doesn't quite make as striking result, but it is a nice scrunchie anyways.

Kirppismekon keväinen tuunaus / Maxi dress thrift flip

Ostin pari viikkoa sitten kirpputorin alepäivästä 3 eurolla keväisen kukkamekon, joka oli minulle kokoa liian pieni, mutta jonka kukkaprintistä pidin paljon. Leikkasin sen kahteen osaan ja tein alaosasta maksipituisen hameen helpolla vyötärökuminauhalla. Aikaa tuunaamiseen meni alle tunti ja kangasta jäi yläosasta niin, että voin ommella siitä vaikkapa hiuspannan. Materiaali on valitettavasti polyesteria, joten kesähelteillä tämä saattaa tuntua kuin muovipussilta, mutta näin kolealla kevätkelillä tuulipuvut on pop.

I got a maxi dress from a thrift store few weeks ago for 3 euros. I liked the flowery print a lot, but the size and shape was wrong for me. So I cut the dress in two and made a floor-length skirt out of the bottom half. I plan to sew something small out of the top too. The material looks great, but happens to be polyester, so in summer heat this may feel like wearing a plastic bag, but for now it's fine.

Tuunattu trikootoppi / Patchwork singlet

Viime vuonna ompelin isäni vanhasta t-paidasta ja kierrätyskeskuksesta vitosella ostamastani kasasta t-paitoja mekon, ja siitä projektista jäi vielä ylijäämätilkkuja, joten surautin niistä tämän topin. Esikuvana oli Patchwork Singlet -ohje Birgitta Helmerssonin kirjasta Zero Waste Patterns. Kankaat ovat puuvillaneuloksia ja puuvillasekoitemateriaaleja, joten ne joustavat jonkin verran ja toppi sopii siis kevyeen treeniin.

I made last year a patchwork dress out of my dad's old t-shirt and some thrifted shirts gotten from a recycling center for a fiver. There were fabric scarps, so I decided to sew a top out of them. I was inspired by the picture of Patchwork Singlet by Birgitta Helmersson, though my patchwork squares were different size to hers. The original pattern has been published in Zero Waste Patterns book. My project wasn't quite zero waste, as some corner pieces had to be thrown away, but on the other hand there is still material left, and I would be able to sew a pair of shorts from the scraps of the scraps.

Kekkosmekko t-paidoista / Dress refashioned out of t-shirts

Olin säästänyt isäni poismenon jälkeen hänellä olleen Kekkosen kuvalla varustetun XL-kokoisen t-paidan. Suunnittelin tuunavani siitä jotain itselleni ja nyt sitten surauttelin saumurilla sen pohjalta mekon. Kierrätyskeskuksessa oli kanta-asiakasale, josta ostin kasan vanhoja t-paitoja pääosin euron korista, niin että tilkkumateriaaleille kertyi hintaa noin viisi euroa. Leikkelin paidoista ja yhdestä jo kotoa löytyneestä jämäkankaasta neliöitä ja surautin niistä uuden ruutukankaan, jonka kiinnitin lyhentämääni isän t-paitaan. Äitini arveli, että myös yläosa kaipaa väriä, joten lisäsin sulan Kekkosen hattuun. Ja nyt minulla on Kekkosmekko, joka muistuttaa isästäni. Inspiraationa ruutuihin oli niin kuva 1970-luvun Suuressa Käsityökerhossa kuin kuva virolaislähtöisessä Käsityö-lehdessä kesältä 2017.

I came across a refashioning challenge online and that inspired me to make something with a t-shirt of my late father, who passed away about two years ago. The black tee has face of former Finnish President Urho Kekkonen on it. To add colour to the project I also purchased a bunch of old t-shirts from the local recycling center for about a fiver. I cut squares out of those and some left-over fabric. I sewed the rectangles together to make a new patchwork checkerboard. It was surprisingly fast, as the whole process of cutting and finishing the dress took about six hours. I wasn't too fussed about perfect rectangle sizes or neat corners, as the materials are stretchy cotton knits and cotton-blends. The result is groovy and reminds me of my dad.

Auringonkukkabaskeri / Beret with sunflower embroidery

Kirjastossa vastaan tuli kiva kirjontakirja Paint with Thread, jonka on tehnyt Emillie Ferris. Kiertelin kirppareita sopiva tyhjä kangas mielessäni ja sininen villabaskeri löytyi 7 eurolla. Aloitin kirjailun huhtikuussa ja kuvittelin kirjovani yhden ison auringonkukan viikossa tai parissa. Sen sijaan kirjontapistoni näyttivät erityisesti lähietäisyydeltä kamalilta, joten projekti venyi ja unohtui useaksi kuukaudeksi. Nyt sain kirjonnan kuitenkin valmiiksi sopivasti auringonkukkien kukinta-aikaan. Kauempaa katsoen tekokukka näyttää ihan kohtalaiselta. Kirjontalangat ovat mummon jämiä ja kirpparilta löytyneitä lankoja.

I came across inspiring book Paint with Thread by Emillie Ferris in the library. And to have something to embroider on, I went in search of berets in thrift stores and found a blue one for 7 euros. I started to embroider a sunflower on the beret in April and thought it'd be a nice quick project to finish in a week or two. Instead it became like making the Bayeux tapestry, that just goes on and on. My embroidery stitches looked especially uneven from close proximity. Then I shoved and forgot the half-done beret in a bag for several months. And now, in time for the actual sunflower season, I finished it. It is not at all as neat as the sample in the book, but it does look like sunflower. And from distance it looks slightly better. Materials were thrifted or found at home, as I used my late grannys's old embroidery threads and some thrifted metallic thread on this second hand beret.

Merkein tuunattu kirppistakki / Personalised parka

Tarvitsin jossain määrin vedenpitävää välikausitakkia ja tämä vihreä takki löytyi kirpparilta 6 eurolla. Se ei ollut tyypillistä väriäni tai tyyliäni, joten tuunasin sitä hivenen vähemmän militantiksi erilaisilla ompelumerkeillä. Merkkien arvo meni nopeasti ohi takin, kun ne olivat noin 3 euroa kipale. Harsin ne ompelulangalla paikalleen silittämisen sijaan, joten ne voi helposti poistaa, jos kyllästyn tai laitan takin takaisin kiertoon.

I was in need of a somewhat water-resistant coat and got this green parka from 2nd hand shop for 6 euros. It is bit more militant than my usual style, so I decided to soften the look with fun patches. Those were around 3 euros piece, so their value exceeded the coat quite quickly. These patches could be ironed on, but I decided to hand-sew them on gently, so I can take them off easily if I take the coat back to recycling at some point.

Farkkuhame / Skirt from new and reused denim

Tämä farkkuhame on tuunattu uutta ja vanhaa materiaalia yhdistäen. Taskut ja nappi- sekä vyötärönauha on tehty vanhoista lempifarkuista leikatusta vaaleammasta kankaasta ja loput tummemmasta farkusta, jota ostin kirpputorilta joskus 4 euron metrihinnalla muutaman metrin. Napit on myös eriparisia ja poimittu alelaarista alle 2 eurolla. Lisäksi tarvitsin vetoketjun takasaumaan ja sen sain alle 2.5 eurolla. Ohje on Jenny Hellström Ruasin ruotsinkielisestä Sy! Från snickarbyxa till sommarklänning -kijasta, jonka lainasin kirjastosta. Muokkasin Bluebell volangkjol -ohjetta jättämällä helmaröyhelön pois ja tekemällä taskuista epäsymmetriset. Lisäksi tein nappikujasta vain koristeen, sillä hameeseen tuli myös käytännöllinen vetoketju takapuolelle. 

This skirt is made out of my old favourite jeans and some darker deadstock denim that I got from a 2nd hand shop for 4 euros per meter. I picked the buttons up from a sales bin at a fabric store for under 2 euros, and they´re all slightly mismatched. Then I needed a new zipper to hold the whole thing together and for functionality, as I chose to do the buttons as purely decorative feature. The novelty zipper was under 2.5 euros. The pattern is a modification of Bluebell volangkjol by Jenny Hellström Ruas from her Swedish book Sy! Från snickarbyxa till sommarklänning. The book was from a library.

Kirppispaidan viimeistely / Thrifted 60s blouse refashioned

Löysin Nextiili-kirpputorilta tämä noin 1960-lukulaisen puseron kahdella eurolla. Siinä oli viimeistelemätön helma, joten paitaa oli joko lyhennetty joskus tai se oli jäänyt kesken alunperinkin. Väri on kuitenkin hieno, siinä on tyylikkäät kangaspäällysteiset napit ja materiaalikin tuntuu miellyttävältä tekosilkiltä. Se ei ole muovinen muttei ihan silkkisen luonnollinenkaan. Surautin helman valmiiksi ja nyt paita on käytettävissä.

I bought this blouse from a second hand shop for 2 euros. It had a tag saying it was from around 1960s or 70s, and all the details, such a fabric-covered buttons and simple seams, point to the era. It also had a raw unfinished hem, either as a result of unfinished sewing business or botched shortening job. I hemmed the shirt and now it ready for use. 

Hame on isotädin vanha ja materiaalitietolapussa sen kerrotaan olevan asetaatin ja viskoosin yhdistelmämateriaalia. Hame rypistyy helposti eikä sovi kovin hyvin yhteen modernin höyrysilitysraudan kanssa. Samettibaskeri on kirpparilta ja hansikkaat sekä aurinkolasit moderneja mutta vintagetyyliin sopivia valmisvaatteita.

Skirt is my great-aunt's old hand-me-down. It is probably from the 1960s or 70s, and material feels soft and flowey, but behaves badly with modern washing and ironing equipment. The acetate-viscose blend material is not something you read in modern clothes tags. The velvet beret is a 2nd hand find. And gloves and sunglasses are inexpensive high-street finds that suit vintage style well.

Läpsyt / Sewn mittens

Minulla oli jäännösmateriaaleja useamman vuoden takaa, kun olin kerännyt kirppiksiltä urheilujoukkueiden huiveja ja koonnut niistä tämän takin. Samoilla kirppiskierroksilla löytyneestä sydänkuvioisesta huivista saadusta neuloksesta ompelin nämä lapaset Läpsy-ohjeella Janita Perttulan kirjasta Kullannuttu. Alkuperäisen huivin tekstien päälle applikoin sydämiä. Toiseen lapaspariin käytin saumuria ja toiseen ompelukoneen siksak-ommelta kokeillakseni tulosta ja molemmat toimivat ihan hyvin, vaikkakin siksakkasin kulmakohdissa varmuuden vuoksi molemmissa, jotta ne eivät varmasti purkautuisi. Ompelukoneella pystyy tekemään tarkempaa työtä kuin saumurilla. Kirjassa oli ompeluohjeita vain lapsille, joten nämä lapaset on lasten XL-kokoa ja päätyvät joululahjaksi.

Several years ago I bought bunch of sports scarves from thrift stores and made this jacket out of them. I had bought a scarf with heart-motifs too, and decided to use it to make sewn mittens. I came across the pattern in Finnish pattern book called Kullannuttu. I made kids XL size mittens, which is for tweens, and will give these as Xmas gift. I appliqued hearts on top of lettering of the original scarf. I also tested whether a sewing machine or overlocker made better result, as I made each pair with different machine. Both worked, but I used the zig-zag stitch of sewing machine to go over the tight corners on both to ensure that the stitches really stay in place. And I also hemmed both mittens with the sewing machine. These sewn mittens were quick to make, but I would say I prefer knitting mittens rather than sewing them, because in knitting you actually make your own fabric and shape it as you go.

Paitatuunaus / Blouse refashion

Ostin tämän valmisvaatepaidan kolmella eurolla ja mietin miten saisin sen toimivammaksi itselleni. Se oli kokoa liian suuri ja hihat kaipasivat mielestäni kevennystä, vaikka värit ja röyhelöt olivatkin hurmavia. Pätkäisin siis hihat ja lisäsin vyötärölle kuminauhakujan, joka tuo paidalle enemmän muotoa.

I modified this ready-to-wear blouse gotten for 3 euros to be more my size and style. The frills and fabric were lovely, and I had eyeballed similar styles in sewing magazines already. This blouse is about a size bigger than I'd normally wear, and the sleeves felt heavy. So I chopped the sleeves off, hemmed them and also added a rubber band around the waist to give it more shape.

Tuunattu Kekkos-myssy / Beanie refashion

Tein Kekkos-pipon isälleni joululahjaksi vuosia sitten ja nyt kun isää ei enää ole, olen ollut valitsemassa hänen vaatteistaan niitä, jotka on säilytettäviä aarteita ja niitä, jotka viedään kirpparille, josta ne toivottavasti päätyvät tuomaan enemmän iloa jollekin toiselle. Tämä hattu, tai myssy, on säilytettävien joukossa, mutta on tehty isopäiselle isälleni, joten neuloin siihen vuorin, jotta se sopisi paremmin minulle ja olisi myös kameleonttimaisempi kääntöpipo. Itse en ole Kekkoslovakiaa kokenut, mutta Kekkosen naaman näkeminen saa monelle hymyn huulille, tai sitten irvistykseen. Jatkopala on neulottu Drops Soft Tweed -langasta 3.25 mm puikoilla. Harkitsin Kainuunharmas-lankaa ollakseni supertemaattinen, mutta varastossani ollut villa oli liian ohutta jo olemassa olevaa pipoa varten.

After my Dad passed away I have been dividing his clothes into those that are treasures to be kept, and those that can be taken to charity shops where they'll hopefully get a new life. This beanie is something I made as Christmas gift for my Dad several years ago. It was for his bigger head, so to able to wear it myself, I knitted a new leayer to it that makes it also reversible. I used Drops Soft Tweed yarn and 3.25 mm needles. The face on the hat is a former president of Finland that was at the helm of the country for a large part of my Dad's life. And the DIY scarf has the face of all the presidents so far. Both I think were suitable gifts for a history buff.

Kukkakirjontatuunattu paita / Daisy sweater

Joskus norjalaista House of Yarn -sivustoa selaillessani vastaan tuli Dale garnin Daisy genser -ohje yksinkertaiselle villapaidalle, jossa on kukkakirjailuja. En jaksanut neuloa pohjapaitaa, mutta kesäalerekissä vastaan tuli valmisneule 5.50 eurolla, joten totesin sen sopivan pohjakankaaksi ja kokeilukappaleeksi. Kirjoin päivänkakkaroita pari tusinaa paitaan. Lankoina on kotoa löytynyttä valkoista mohair-sekoitetta, joka saattaa olla isoäidin jämiä, ja Nextiilin osastolta kädentaitomessuilta ostettua kierrätykseen tuotua villalankaa, joka maksoi 2.20 euroa, ja jota jäi suurin osa vyyhdistä jäljelle. En neulahifistellyt vaan nappasin jonkin isomman parsinneulan tyynystä. Tässä käytetyt kirjontapistot olivat yksinkertaisia ja pieni kukkien kokovaihtelu vain sopii luonnonkukkateemaan. 

I saw a summery Daisy genser pattern by Norwegian yarn manufacturer Dale Garn on House of Yarn website. I did not knit the base sweater, but found a ready-to-wear sweater on summer sale for 5.5 euros. I added the embroidery using white mohair-blend and yellow wool that I got from the booth of recycled yarns from craft fair. It cost only 2.2 euros and left plenty of left-overs. I used a simple large sharp needle, as I'm not an expert on embroidery needles. Also the embroidery stitches needed for this were quite simple. The ready-to-wear sweater is of material blend of mostly synthetic materials, which makes it probably less durable and more likely to pill than a hand-knit wool sweater would be, and more hard to recycle if it is ever taken to processing. But I hope to get many years of wear out of this.

Raitatunika uusvanhoin langoin / Wave of Change tunic

Tämä tunika on toinen versio, jonka olen neulonut samalla Denise Bayronin Wave of Change -ohjeella. Lisäsin siihen pituutta Sirdarin mekko-ohjeen 10137 innoittamana. Ohje Sirdarin mekkoon löytyy Kotiliesi Käsityö -lehdestä 2/2021. Tällä kertaa käytin lankoja, joita purin vanhoista projekteistani sekä tummemman sinistä Novita Lumo-lankaa. Puikot 5 mm ja 5.5 mm.

This tunic is the second version of the Wave of Change Pullover by Denise Bayron that I've knitted. I decided to add length after seeing the Tunic Dress 10137 by Sirdar. The yarns are reused from old projects with fresh ball of darker blue Novita Lumo. Needles 5 mm and 5.5 mm.

Flannellitoppi / Scrappy hippie

Viime viikolla ompelemani mekon jämäpalosta, kuten isäni vanhasta paidasta, ja muista jämäkankaista ompelin tämän topin, johon käytin arviolta 1960- tai 1970-luvun alkupuolen ompelukaavaa Stil 4263. Stil-kaavoja tulee vastaan kirppareilla ja se vaikuttaa olleen pohjoismainen projekti, sillä ohjeet on suomeksi ja ruotsiksi. Tälläkin kaavalla joku on aiemmin ommellut, sillä kuoressa tuli kaupanpäällisinä vanha nuppineula.

 This top is sewn with fabric scraps from the dress I made last week and some other diy projects. The orange flannel is my dad's old shirt. The pattern I used looks like a 1960s or maybe early 70s pattern and is called Stil 4263, but I think this brand was made only for the Scandinavian market as the instructios are in Finnish and Swedish.

Tuunattu flanellipaitamekko / Refashioned lumberjill

Tämä mekko on tuunattu kolmesta vanhasta puuvillaisesta flanellipaidasta Simplicity 1006 -ompeluohjeella, joka on vuodelta 1975. Punainen ja sininen paita löytyivät yhteensä 3 eurolla kirpparilta ja oranssi paita on isäni vanha, jonka sain koska siinä oli reikä olkapäässä. Myös ohje on kirpparilta ja taisi maksaa euron. Joku on joskus ommellut ohjeella, sillä paperikaavat oli leikattu muotoon ja niissä oli muutama repeämä. Omaan mekkooni muokkasin korkean kaula-aukon, jotta se olisi lämmin syksyllä. Laitoin myös puoli senttiä ylimääräisiä saumanvaroja joka suuntaan ja vajaat viisi senttiä helmaan, jotta mekon alle mahtuu aluspaita ja legginsit kylmemmillä keleillä.

This dress is sewn with Simplicity pattern number 1006 that was published in 1975. I got the pattern for one euro from a thrift store last year. The fabrics I used are three old cotton shirts, two of which I got for 3 euros from a 2nd hand shop, and the third, orange shirt is my dad's old. With inexpensive materials one can unleash one's scissorhands and experiment a bit. I modified the neckline to be higher and thus warmer, and the patchwork look is a result of the mismatchy materials. All three shirt backsides and one front of a shirt became the skirt panels, which I made as long as possible, maybe 4 cm longer than in the pattern. There is one additional side seam pocket and one patch pocket that came with the blue shirt, so it's pretty practical. I also made the dress extra roomy, so that I can fit it over a shirt and leggings for a warm fall outfit.
