Venny-neuletunika / Mild stripes sweater

Aloitin tämän Venny-neulepaidan neulomisen jo vuonna 2021, mutta käyttämäni mohairsekoitelanka loppui kesken ja sain lisää samaa laatua vasta noin puoli vuotta myöhemmin. Paita jäi kuitenkin yhä kesken ja nyt muutamaa vuotta myöhemmin tikkusin sen vihdoin valmiiksi ja annoin äidilleni lahjaksi. Venny-ohje on Veera Välimäen Raidat-kirjasta ja helmaan lisäsin Melody Hoffmannin Tulip-ohjeesta piparkakkureunuksen. Lankoina on Fibra Natura Papyrus, joka on puuvillaa ja silkkiä, sekä Schachenmayr Fashion Kid Light, joka on mohair-nailon-akryylisekoite ja jota neuloin kaksinkertaisena. Puikkokokoina 4 mm ja 4.5 mm.

I had started to knit this version of Venny sweater already in 2021, but ran out of one of the yarns and stopped for a while. Now I finished it and gave it to my mom as a gift. The base is Veera Välimäki's Venny pattern and I added to it a wavy hem from Melody Hoffmann's pattern Tulip. I used 4 mm and 4.5 mm knitting needles. The mildly stripey look comes from two very similar shades of yarn. One is Fibra Natura Papyrus, a cotton and silk blend. The other yarn is Schachenmayr Fashion Kid Light, that I held double and that's a mohair-nylon-acrylic blend.

Tyllimekko on outlet-myynnistä kympillä ostettu, kengät kirpparilta muistaakseni 7 eurolla ja huivi ja huopahelmet äidin kaapista lainattuja.

The tulle-dress is bought from an outlet sale for a tenner. Shoes are from thrift store and gotten for 7 euros. Scarf and wool-pearls are from mom's closet.

Vuosikertaprinttejä / Prints from mom's youth

Äitienpäivänä yllä äidin itselleen 1970-luvulla ompelema mekko. Myös hattu ja hansikkaat on äidin. Itse olen ommellut pitsipuseron ja tuunannut kaulakorun askarteluhelmistä. Kengät ja muut asusteet on uusina ostettuja.

This print dress was sewn by my mom for herself in the 1970s and she has luckily kept it and given it to me. The hat an gloves are from her closet too. The lace blouse is sewn by me, but with an original 1970s pattern. Rest is ready-to-wear.

Äidin käsitöitä / Mom's makings

Tässä joitain äidin tekemiä käsitöitä. Niin neulominen, eli kutominen, kuin ompelu ja kirjontakin sujuvat, mutta hän on enemmän kausittainen projekti-ihminen kuin jatkuva väkertäjä. Villasukat on muutaman vuoden takaa ja improvioitu valikoimalla kuvio jostain kirjasta ja soveltamalla sukat kuvion ympärille. Ommeltu joulukalenteri on jämäkankaista ommeltu ja kirjailtu. Mekon äitini ompeli itselleen 1970-luvulla ja keltaiset verhot myös, ja hän onneksi säästi ne, vaikka moni omatekeoinen vaate on toki käytetty loppuun eikä ole säilynyt nykypäivään.

Some of my mom's makings and handiwork. She knows how to do most crafts like knitting, sewing and crochet, as she grew up in a time and place where buying things from store wasn't as easy as it nowadays. For example as a teenager she cut her uncle's old wool coat up and made a new smaller coat for herdelf out of it. The flower-patterned socks here are knitted by her few years ago. She just picked a pattern from a stitch dictionary and improvised the shape. The sewn Advent calendar unerneath is a great idea and my childhood favourite, and it includes machine sewing and embroidery by hand. And the fabrics used for the calendar were scraps from this and that. And the groovy dress and curtain in funky fabrics are sewn in the 1970s.

On this Mother's day in Me-Made-May I decided to wear a mom-made dress that she made for herself in the 1970s and that I've gotten to my use. The white Pierrot blouse is me-made. Wood jewelry is artisan-made and gotten from craft fairs. Bag was a birthday gift and the rest is ready-to-wear.

Matka-asu / Vintage travels

Ruskea on harvan suosikkiväri, joten sen värisiä vintageasusteita löytää edullisesti. Kengät ja laukun ostin muutamalla eurolla kirpparilta. Niiden ajallinen määrittäminen on vaikeaa, sillä kenkien tekstit ovat kuluneet pois, mutta arvelen niiden olevan 70-luvun tuotantoa, joka haki inspiraationsa 1930-luvulta. Myös hattu on vanha, mutta vaikea sanoa miten vanha, sillä valmistajan merkkiä siinä ei ole. 60-luvulla pienet hatut olivat muotia ja tämän materiaali on jonkinlaista keinokuitua. Matkalaukku on äidin kirppisostos jostain Pohjanmaalta ja aito Samsonite, jota joku on tuunannut jenkkikuvastoa liimaamalla. Mekko afrikkalaista kitenge-kangasta.

Many people find brown a musty old-fashioned colour, so brown accessories are cheap in second hand and thrift stores. I got both the shoes and hat for few euros each. The shoes must be 1970s-does-1930s reproduction as tehy are old, but not that old. The hat has no labels, but to my knowledge small hats were fashionable for example in the 60s. The material is artificial and not straw as you would expect with older hats. The Samsonite plywood trunk is bought by my mom and someone has decoupaged Americana-themed picures onto it. The dress is African kitenge fabric.

Retromekko / Granny takes a trip

Vastaan tuli Mrs. Hughes -blogin haaste pukeutua kuin mummo, Dress like your Grandma. Tutkailin vanhoja albumeja, joissa sekä isänäiti että äidinäiti löytyvät kuvattuina ruutumekoissa 1930-luvulla. Äiti on omatekoisessa pepitaruutuisessa mekossa 1960-luvulla ja hypnotisoitavana jälleen yhdessä ruutumekossa 1970-luvulla. Etsin kangaskaupasta hieman konservatiivisempaa ruutua, mutta hullu tilkkukangas puhutteli minua, joten ompelin sitten 1970-lukulaisen mekon. Kaava on vuodelta 1971, Simplicity 9723, joka löytyi 1,5 eurolla. Kangas maksoi noin 17 euroa ja napit on uusiokäytössä jostain purkukohteesta.
I came across a lovely challenge called Dress like your Grandma by Mrs. Hughes. I browsed though the family albums and saw both of my grandmas wearing gingham or plaid dresses in the 1930s. This seems to be common outfit for country pumpkins of various generations as my mom is pictured in a homemade plaid dress in 1960s, and then again in another checkerboard dress in 1970s (while being hypnotized. Oh, the fascinating 70s). I was looking for a conservative plaid, but came across this crazy quilt fabric that just spoke to me. So I went to the Granny-takes-a-trip direction and used my Simplicity 9723 pattern from 1971 to sew this. So, this is a loose intepretation of the granny plaid dress.

Äidin vaatekaapilla / Me-Made-May day eight

Äitienpäivän lounaalle sopivaksi asuksi valikoitui äidin 1970-luvulla itselleen ompelema mekko ja itse äidille lahjaksi tekemäni huovutettu huivi.
Today, on Mother's Day and Me-Made-May day eight, I chose a dress sewn by my mom for herself in the 1970s and a felted scarf that I made for my mom this winter.

Sinappiviitta / Cape redone

Tämä viittamaisen takin materiaalina on äitini vanha villaviitta, jonka sain leikellä kappaleiksi. Napit piti ostaa uusina ja ne maksoivat yhteensä 6 euroa. Burda-lehti 8/2009, jossa ohje tähän viittaan oli, löytyi kirpputorilta eurolla.
My mom had an old woolen cape that she did not use anymore, so she gave me permission to cut it into pieces and make something new. I found an old Burda magazine (8/2009) from thrift store and liked the trench cape pattern in it. So I made a cape of wool. The buttons had to be bought new and they cost 6 euros in total.

Retroväreissä / Retro colours

Tämä Nuoren Eevan kirja vuodelta 1962 kirja on myös äitini vanha. Siitä löytyy esimerkiksi hauskoja naamiaisasuideoita ja iltalaukun ompeluvinkkejä. Kuvissa on ihana 60-lukulainen väritys.
This book for girls from 1962 is my mom's. There are lovely pictures and cute advice on costumes and diy bags.

Sellainen oli Lontoo / Bookish London

 

Tsekkiläinen Miroslav Šašek kirjoitti ja kuvitti 1950-luvulta alkaen lastenkirjoja maailman metropoleista. Tässä uusintapainoksessa vuonna 1959 alun perin julkaistusta Lontoon oppaasta näkee hurmaavia kuvia.
This is London is a children's book from 1959 by Czech writer and illustrator Miroslav Šašek . It has charming picures of of London of the era.



Hame ja paita ovat äidin vanhoja, neuletakki on isoäidin vanha.
The skirt and shirt are mom's old, the cardigan is a hand-me-down from my grandma.

Psyko / Psycho

Hitchcockin Psykon puvustuksessa vuodelta 1960 on nähtävissä sekä kynähameita että leveähelmaisempia hameita. Mustavalkoinen elokuva on tehokas.
Costuming in Psycho by Alfred Hitchcock from 1960 has both pencil skirts and flared skirts to be seen. All in effective black and white. 



Valkoinen pusero on äidin vanha, hame on isoäidin kotitekoinen hame luultavasti 1970-luvulta. Kengät kirpputorilta 2 eurolla.
The white blouse is mom's old, the skirt is homemade by my grandma in the 1970s. And shoes are a second hand find for two euros.

Linnut / Birds

Alfred Hitchcockin Linnut liian nuorena nähneenä, linnut pelottavat. Nämä papukaijat vaikuttavat kuitenkin ystävällisiltä. Neule Prahasta, hame äidin vanha 1980-90-lukujen taitteesta.
I saw Alfred Hitchcock's Birds at too young age propably as I am slightly afraid of birds. These parrots on a cardigan seem friendly though. The cardi is from Prague. Skirt is mom's old from late 1980s.

1970-lukulaisittain / Like my mom in the Seventies

Mekko, vyö ja laukku ovat kaikki äidin jäämiä 1970-luvulta. Mekon hän on ommellut itse. Hattu ja kengät ovat kirpputoreilta.
The dress, belt and bag are all my mom's old stuff from the Seventies. She has sewn the dress herself. Accompanying hat and shoes are second hand purchases.

1930-lukulaisittain / Ilsa from the Thirties

Hattu, paita ja kengät ovat kirpputorilöytöjä, hame on äidin vanha ja jakku myös. Itse asiassa tämä samettijakku oli äitini yllä vanhempieni mennessä naimisiin. Ilmeisesti 80-luvun alussa ruskea sopi häihinkin.
The hat, blouse and shoes are second hand finds. Skirt is mom's old as well as the jacket. My mom actually got married in this brown blazer. But that was the early 80s, so all is forgiven.

1930-luvulle on sijoitettu moni elokuva myöhemminkin kiitos glamourin ja dramaattisen maailmantilanteen. Casablanca on ikisuosikki.
Many films have been set to the thirties even later on thanks to the glamour and dramatic world events of the period. Casablanca is a favourite of mine.
