Nämä lapaset on neulottu perinteistä latvialaista lapasohjetta muokaten 1.5 mm puikoilla latvialaisesta sinisestä liukuvärjätystä Dundaga-langasta ja suomalaisista valkoisesta ja harmaasta langasta. Nimen Graph 53 saanut ohje löytyi kirjasta Latvian mittens - Latviešu cimdi, jonka on koonnut ja kirjoittanut Lizbeth Upitis latvilaisista ohjeista Yhdysvalloissa vuonna 1981. These mittens are a modification of a traditional Latvian mitten pattern that has been published with the name Graph 53 in a book Latvian mittens - Latviešu cimdi by Lizbeth Upitis. The book was first published in 1981 in the US, as Latvia had limited freedoms at the time under the iron rule of USSR. Latvian mitten traditions were kept alive in Latvia and by emigrants, and many fabulous books have been published with the beautiful patterns originating from this Mecca of mittens by the Baltic sea. For a small country different regions have had their own styles and symbols and colours. But some features, such as symmetry and ornamention, can be found in all of the traditional patterns. In the marriage ceremony mittens played a part too, and mittens were given as gifts. My mittens are made with gradiating blue Latvian Dundaga wool and the white and grey are Finnish yarns. Needle size is 1.5 mm.

Snøfrost villapaita / Snøfrost jumper

Testineuloin tämän Snøfrost-villapaitaohjeen, jonka on suunnitellut ThePetiteKnitter. Tein paitani koossa M ja lankoina käytin valkoista Pirtin Kehräämön Villasilkkilankaa ja punertavaa on Kehrättären Lieko-lankaa. Punaista kului kaksi vyyhtiä ja valkoista vajaa yksi. Puikkokoko 3.5 mm ja 4 mm. Paitaohjeen sain vastineeksi testineulonnasta ja siihen sopivan hatun ohjeen ostin itse. Olen testannut pari ohjetta aiemminkin ja on mukava auttaa suunnittelijoita kokeilemalla heidän ohjettaan ja selvittämällä löytyykö siitä epäselvyyksiä. Tämä paita oli sopiva yhdistelmä keskittymistä vaativaa kirjoneuletta ja rennompaa yksiväristä hihojen neulontaa.

I test-knitted the Snøfrost jumper pattern by ThePetiteKnitter. This is knitted in size M. The yarns I used are Finnish. The white yarn is called Villasilkkilanka and consists of 50% Finnish sheep wool and 50% recycled silk. The red yarn is called Lieko and it is 100% Finnish wool. Needle size is 3.5 mm and 4 mm. I purchased the matching Snøfrost hat, and the sweater pattern I got in exchange for testing the pattern. I've test-knitted a couple of times before and it is nice to be part of the process and try something new and see if I understand the instructions. This pattern had a nice mix of stranded knitting and plain stockinette. Stranded colourwork requires concentration, and stockinette that is more of a smooth sailing. Pattern testing helps also to see how the same pattern looks in different colour combinations. I chose colours quite close to the designer's sample picture, as I liked them so much, but this would look cool in blue too.

60-luvun villahame / 1960s woolskirt

Olin ostanut kirpparilta 1960-luvun villahameen, jonka laitoin tarkemmin ajattelematta 40-asteiseen pyöritykseen pesukoneeseen, jossa se kutistui. Vyötärönauha ei enää mennyt kiinni ja vetskari ja helma vinoutuivat. Korjasin asiaa leikkaamalla uuden vyötärökaitaleen jämäkankaasta ja ompelemalla uuden vetoketjun, mutta voi olla että hame kaipaa vielä jonkinlaista korjaamista. Hame on kuitenkin mukavan lämmin ja väreiltäänkin pehmeä.

I got this skirt from 2nd hand shop and it is pretty likely to be from the 1960s as it is all woolly and rusticy and the seams are quite simple. I put in the washing machine where it shrank. As it is bias-cut, it got all wonky and the zipper and waistband didn't fit anymore. So I tried to do damage control and fixed some details, though this might still need some work. I like the colour and the warmth of wool very much though, so this is really worth refashioning.

The Snowfall hat and the sweater that is a modification of a Finnish pattern Lampaankasvattajan paita are diy. The mittens are decades old and found at home and likely made by either by my granny or her sister. The stockings were a gift and the shoes I bought as new.

Snøfrost myssy / Snøfrost hat

Tämä ThePetiteKnitter-nimisen suunnittelijan Snøfrost myssy on neulottu 3 mm pyöröpuikolla ja lankoina on valkoinen Pirtin Kehräämön Villasilkkilanka ja punertava Kehrättären Lieko. Lieko on 100% kotimaista villaa ja Villasilkkilanka puolet suomalaista villaa ja puolet kierrätyssilkkiä.

This beanie is knitted with the Snøfrost hat pattern that is designed by ThePetiteKnitter. I made a size M hat with 3 mm needle, which is slightly smaller size than recommended, but I wanted a dense texture against the elements. The yarns local to me. The burgundy yarn is called Lieko and it's 100% Finnish wool. The white yarn is Villasilkkilanka and consists of 50% Finnish wool and 50% recycled silk.

Paikatut käsineet / How to mend a glove

Äidiltä sosialisoituihin hanskoihin oli tullut reikiä, joten neuloin pienet hatut sormenpäihin ja ompelin ne paikoilleen paikkaamaan reikiä. Puikkokoko 2 mm ja lankana latvialainen täysvilla.

These gloves got holes on them, so I knitted small hats for the fingers to mend the holes. The yarn is Latvian wool and needle size 2 mm.

The Pangolin sweater is diy, the scarf is thrifted and the turtleneck is ready-to-wear.

Kasarityyliä / Early 1980s knitting

Hankin harvinaisemman 1980-luvun neulekirjan viidellä punnalla nettiantikvariaatista. Patricia Roberts suunnitteli ja julkaisi paljon 1980-luvulla mutta ei vaikuta olevan aktiivinen suunnittelija enää. Tämä kirja Patricia Roberts Knitting Book vuodelta on vuodelta 1981. Sen tyylissä on sekä 70- että 80-luvun tuntua, joka tuntuu retrolta ja hilpeältä juuri nyt. Isot värikkäät neuleet ovat tulollaan ja hiukset pöyhkeytymässä.

  I got this 1980s knitting book for a fiver. Patricia Roberts Knitting book was published in 1981 and the style has some features of the fun 1970s style and the big bright knits of the 1980s seem to be a growing trend, as is the big poofy hair. Patricia Roberts doesn't seem to be an active designer anymore, but these patterns are fun and kitschy in the best possible, deligthful way. And as the older patterns tend not to be found online, I wanted to take a look of genuine 80s patterns.

Hankin kirjan vasemmalla olevaa Fruitmachine-ohjetta varten, mutta sivut, joilla ohjeen olisi pitänyt olla oli revitty irti. En siis pääse neulomaan sitä. Onneksi kirjassa on muitakin kiinnostavia ohjeita enkä siis palauta kirjaa.
I ordered the book mainly for the Fruitmachine pattern that is on the left, but someone had ripped the pages with its instructions, and page numbers jump from 14 to 27. So no Fruitmachine for me. Luckily the book has other patterns I like.

Hippitoppi / Hippie crochet top

Rupesin virkkaamaan tätä toppia viime kesänä, mutta värit ja muoto osoittautuivat odotettua hankalammiksi. Yhdistin ympyrät Sanna Vatasen Pyörylähameesta Shizuyo Morin Motif Pulloveriin, jonka kuvan näin Ravelryssä. Keskiympyrät ovat jämälangoista ja ulkoreunan kiekot on uutta Novita Cotton Soft -lankaa. Kontrasti niiden välillä on kuitenkin melko suuri. Lisäksi jokaista ympyrää piti sovittaa erikseen paikalleen. Tulipahan valmiiksi kuitenkin. Virkkuukoukku 3 mm.

This top is a combination of two patterns: The circle skirt pattern from a Finnish scrap yarn book by Sanna Vatanen and Motif Pullover by Shizuyo Mori. I started to crochet this last summer with black and green scrap yarns, and then took few fresh balls of pastel gradient yarn. This contrast between those turned out quite big, so I'm not completely happy with result. Also in assembling the top I had to piece it like a puzzle, which was time consuming. But less successful projects are part of crafts too.
