Punaiset väripilkut vaatekaapistani ovat vasemmalla oleva improvisoitu virkkuutakki ja oikealla oleva tunikapaita. Molemmat on tehty jämälangoista tai yksittäisistä keristä.

Punaiset puvustukset ovat tv-sarjoista Gilmoren tytöt ja Twin Peaks sekä elokuvasta Grease 2 ja Hercule Poirot -sarjan jaksosta Cat Among Pigeons. Keskellä on ohjeelliset Granny Raglan Pullover -paita ja vintage-ohje vuodelta 1935 The Australian Women's Weekly -lehdestä. These fabulous examples of costume design are from the television series Gilmore Girls and Twin Peaks, and from the film Grease 2 and the tv-film Cat Among Pigeons that is an episode of the Hercule Poirot mystery series. The pattern with similar retro vibes and combination of knitting and crochet in one at the center is Granny Raglan Pullover by Lion brand. The vintage pattern at the bottom center is from 1935 and published in The Australian Women's Weekly.

40-luvun kirjoneuleet / Forties Fair Isle

Fair Isle knits were fashonable in the 1940s as scarcity of materials encouraged to use left-over yarns. The top patterns from early 1900s are in a Finnish book, the center book is Knit Vintage by Madeline Weston and Rita Taylor. The bottom pattern is called Laurent by Sharon Peake, and it can be found in Vintage Knits book.

Costume design has helped to recreate 1940s and 1950s in all their glory in Foyle's War, Grantchester, My Mother and Other Strangers and Their Finest. The center row has some original patterns from 40s and 50s. The top one has only a vintage photo without the actual pattern. The center pattern can be found from Work 4 Idle Hands and the bottom pattern can be found from Vintage Pattern Archive from Sunny Stitcher.

I made the mohair sweater with giant flower as a teenager, but plan to take it apart to reuse the yarn. It is more like 1960s or 1970s style than 40s, but flower motif keeps coming back in different decades.

Vintageneuleita pienokaisille / Tiny vintage knits

Vanhoja lehtiä selailemalla saa kuvan, mikä on ollut muodikasta lastenvaatteissa esimerkiksi 1940- ja 1950-luvuilla. Mekot ja yhteensopivat shortsipuvut näyttävät olleen suosittuja. Lapaset ovat isotätini neulomia.

These Finnish magazines from 1940s and 50s show the knit fashions for kids of that era. The mittens are made by my great aunt around 1950s and 1960s.

Retrot sarvipääpaidat / Deer sweaters in vintage style

Olen neulonut nämä sarvipäävillapaidat moderneilla ohjeilla, mutta niissä on retrohenkeä. Vasemmalla on muokattu versio Stag Head Pullover -paidasta. Oikealla on muokattu Piers-paita. Jostain syystä hirvi-, peura- ja porokuviot kiehtovat, ehkä jollain alkukantaisella tavalla. Johtuisikohan se länsisuomalaisuudesta, sillä olemme ilmeisesti olleet joskus kaukaisella pakana-ajalla hirven heimoa. Erään teorian mukaan itäsuomalaisten oma eläin taas on ollut karhu. Ne ovat molemmat olleet näiden seutuvien asukkaille tärkeitä eläimiä, joita on kuvattu kalliomaalauksiin ympäri Pohjolaa.

The sweater on the left is a modification of Stag Head Pullover pattern by Norah Gaughan that I made last year. The Piers jumper pattern on the right is by Martin Storey. Even if I'm a vegetarian, one tradition of my my home region that fascinates me, is the annual moose hunting. It has continued pretty much discontinued for hundreds and even thousands of years in Finland. Back in the pagan days the people of Western Finland have possibly been part of the moose tribe, while Eastern Finland has been populated by people of the bear. As this is prehistoric time without written records, theories have been made based on the rock and cave painting found all over Northern Europe. Perhaps this heritage is what keeps us fascinated with the deer motif even today.

The inspiration board on the left is full of deer, reindeer and moose sweaters from mainly 1940s and 1950s. The Norwegian mittens are from 1890s though. On the right there are two modern patterns that are available for free. The Drops Garn Studio pattern on top is called Silver Stag. The bottom right pattern is Reindeer Slipover by Martin Storey and it is currently available for free from Ravelry.

Pitsineuleita / Vintage lace sweaters

Neulepaita on kirpparilta, mutta kauluspaita itse ommeltu ja lapaset on omatekoiset myös.

The lace pullover is thrifted, but the Bouquet mittens and Pierrot blouse are diy.

Tyylikästä vintagepuvustusta löytyy esimerkiksi televisiosarjoista Kotiin takaisin, Grantchester, Kotirintaman naiset ja Bletchleyn nelikko. Kuten myös elokuvasta Their Finest Hour. Oman pitsipaidan voi neuloa Vintage Stitch-o-rama -blogista löytyvällä englanninkielisellä ohjeella (alempi) tai The Autralian Women's Weeklyn Elinor Jumper -ohjeella vuodelta 1940 (ylempi).

The costume designers of A Place to Call Home, Grantchester, Land Girls and The Bletchley Circle have procured beautiful knits for their shows. Also the film Their Finest Hour set in the wartime Britain has fab jumpers. For diy projects there is the Rondo sweater found from the blog Vintage Stitch-o-rama and Elinor jumper published in The Australian Women's Weekly in 1940.

Tirolilaisneuleet / Vintage knits in Tyrolian style

Vasemmalla oleva villatakki on kirpparilta ja oikealla olevan keepin olen neulonut itse. Neulenypyt, palmikot ja lisäksi kirjotut kukkakuviot neuleissa ovat tirolilaistyylin merkkejä. Sen kulta-aika näyttää olleen elokuvien ja tv-sarjojen perusteella erityisesti 1940-luku.

The cardigan on the left is from a 2nd hand shop and the cape on the right is me-made. The bobbles and cables are typical features of Tyrolean knits. Often there are embroidered flowers incorprated too. This style seems to have been popular especially in the 40s.

Tirolilaistyyliä näkee myös televisiosarjoissa Grantchester, Muukalaiset keskellämme, Foylen sota ja Kotirintaman naiset. Ne kaikki sijoittuvat joko 1940- tai 1950-luvulle. Lisäksi modernimmassa Sex Education -sarjassa eräs opettajahahmo on puvustettu vintagehenkisesti tyylikkäisiin neuleisiin. The television series with some Tyrolean style are Grantchester, My Mother and Other Strangers, Foyle's War and Land Girls, which are all set in 1940s or 50s, and more contemporary series Sex Education. There are also some vintage patterns in similar style available online. The top center picture is from Free Vintage Knitting. The pattern on the bottom center is from a 1949 issue of The Australian Women's Weekly.

Raitaneulepaidat / Vintage chevron sweaters

Neuloin tämän villapaidan Falling Stars Top Down Sweater -ilmaisohjeella ja ajattelin epämääräisesti sweater girl -tyylin kulta-aikaa 1950-lukua. Siksak-raitapaitoja löytyy kuitenkin kotimaisista neulelehdistä vuosilta 1953 ja 1972 sekä keskellä olevasta Vintage Knits -kirjasta vuodelta 2005, eli tyyli on aika ajaton.

This sweater is knitted with a free pattern called Falling Stars Top Down Sweater by Elaine Phillips. I aimed for the quintessentially 50s sweater girl look, but the chevron sweater is actually quite timeless. The Finnish magazines left and right are from 1953 and 1972, and the Rowan book Vintage Knits is from 2005, and all these have chevron sweaters.

Valkokankaalla vintage-henkisiä neuleita näkee esimerkiksi televisiosarjoissa Kotiin takaisin ja Sex Education sekä elokuvassa Kaiken teoria. Ilmaisia neuleohjeita löytyy englanniksi esimerkiksi brittiläisestä sota-ajan Home Notes -lehtisestä, jonka Victoria & Albert -museo tarjoaa netissä ilmaiseksi. Alaoikealla oleva vahvemmalle langalle ja isommalle puikkokoolle muokatun Clara-neuleen on suunnitellut Rohn Strong.

On screen chevron sweaters can be admired in tv shows A Place to Call Home and Sex Education. Film The Theory of Everything has a cute retro chevron cardigan too. Victoria & Albert museum from UK offers the original WWII Home Notes pattern for free on their website. The lovely Clara sweater on bottom right corner is by Rohn Strong, and it has the Victory sweater look, but it is a quicker knit, done on larger needles and thicker yarn.

Viitat valkokankaalla / Cape inspiration

I dressed up in primary colours for a bike ride inspired by an outfit challenge. Wearing my diy cape-coat I realised that capes are on the list of the things I always spot, and admire, on screen. I don't really watch superheroes in capes, but tend to seek more tender heroines, though Mary Poppins is stern, and she flies. Here are some of my favourite cape-wearers, and a couple of free vintage knitting patterns for making a cape-coat at home.
