Tilkkuhousut / Fancy patchwork pants

Vastaan tuli haaste ommella hauskat housut, joten kasasin nämä housut tansanialaisten kitenge-kankaiden jämäpaloista. Malli on shortsi-ohje Burda Style -lehdestä 7/2014. Tein monivärishortsit ohjeella muutama vuosi sitten ja nyt pidensin mallia lisäpaloilla talvisemmaksi. 

I made these culottes using left-over fabrics from my fabric stash of Tanzanian kitenge cottons. The pattern I used is a shorts pattern from the Burda Style magazine 7/2014. I had used the pattern in 2015 and love those shorts. The shorts-season is fairly short in Finland though, so I thought culottes would be more wearable. I just cut extra pieces freehand and sewed those on.

Hattu ja paita kirpparilta, huivi omatekoinen, lapaset äidin ja muu uutena ostettua. Verryttelen, koska ompeluhaasteen osanen on tanssia uusissa housuissa.
The pants were inspired by the Fancy Pants sewing challenge and a part of it is to do a fancy pants dance. As I have tried everything from ballet to Bollywood, Riverdance aka Irish dancing to twerking, African dance to belly-dance, here is my dance warm-up. Expert at no dance form, I've tried them all to see if the dance shoe fits.

Satumaiset sukat / Bambi socks

Neuloin polvisukat Titta Järvensivun kirjasta Olipa kerran villasukka, joka on täynnä satumaisia ohjeita. Käytin suositusta paksumpaa lankaa, joten muokkasin kuvioita hieman vähentämällä silmukkamäärää joka suuntaan. Suosituspuikkokoko on 2.5 mm ja itse käytin 4 mm puikkoa yläosassa ja 3.5 mm nilkasta eteenpäin. Lisäksi neuloin sukan muuten pyöröneuleena, mutta vaihdoin tasoneuleeseen ja intarsiaan bambin kohdalla, jottei 3-4 lankaa tarvinnut kuljettaa ympäri sukkaa. Mustat yksityiskohdat kirjoin silmukoita jäljitellen jälkikäteen. Lumihiutalekukat on virkattu. Lankoina Novitan 7 veljestä, Tuomas ja Aapo.

I knitted socks from a book called Olipa kerran villasukka by Titta Järvensivu. The book is currently available only in Finnish and I got it from the library. I modified the pattern a bit as the instructions were for fingering-weight yarn and I had just bought suitable colours in DK and worsted weight. So instead of 2.5 mm needle I used 4 mm on top and 3.5 mm from ankles onward. The yarns I used are by Finnish Novita. Instead from all-the-way in-the-round knitting I made the colourwork flat as a mixture of stranded and intarsia to avoid carrying 3-4 strands in-the-round. I also embroidered the black details afterwards. The snowflake flowers are crocheted.

Mekko omatekoinen, takki kirpparilta, hanskat lahja ja kengät ja sukkikset uutena ostettu.
The dress is diy, coat is thrifted, gloves are gifted, and shoes and stockings are ready-to-wear bought as new.

Kyynärpaikka / Embroidered elbow patch

Pääasiassa kotikäytössä olevaan collegepaitaan oli tullut reikä kyynärpäähän, joten paikkasin sen villahuopapaikalla, johon kirjoin kuvioita Cristin Morganin Kirjontajuttuja-kirjaa mukaillen.

I noticed a hole on the elbow of a ready-to-wear shirt of mine. To fix it I cut a piece in felt fabric that was left-overs from a coat I made a couple years ago. I embroidered a colourful hand on the patch and stitched it on place. The embroidery pattern is from the book Hoop Dreams by Cristin Morgan.

Presidenttihuivi / Pixelated presidents

Tämän isälle joululahjaksi tarkoitetun presidenttihuivin neulomiseen meni odotettua kauemmin eikä se valmistunut jouluksi vaan vasta uuden vuoden päivänä. Pituutta sillä on toki lähes 3.5 metriä. Lankaa kului noin 5 kerää sinistä Novitan Alpaca Woolia ja 3 vyyhtiä Lankavan Sopivaa ja sen loputtua valkoista Novita 7 veikkaa, jotta kaikki pressat pääsisivät mukaan. Toisella puolella on kuvioita kahdesta Suuren käsityön paitaohjeesta lehdistä 9/2018 ja 9/2019. Tulos on massiivinen ja ehkä lopulta liian hieman outo isälleni, joka ei revittele vaatteillaan. Käytän sitten itse, varsinkin kun kääntöpuolella on neutraalimpia kuvioita.

I started to knit this gift scarf with the faces of all the 12 Finnish presidents so far for my dad who likes history in early december. I had hoped to to knit it by Christmas, but finished in finally on 1st of January. Halfway through I was already thinking 'why the long faces, dudes?', but kept on knitting and finally ended up with a scarf that's almost 3.5 meters long. It took about 8.5 skeins of yarn and needle size was 3.5 mm. The result is fun, but perhaps too out there for my old-school dad who wears witty t-shirts, but stays otherwise in the middle of the road with his fashion choices.

Lumipuupäähine / Embroidered snowy trees

Tämä hattu päätyi joululahjaksi. Kirjoin valmiiseen baskeriin puita Yomiko Higuchin ohjeella, joka löytyi kirjasta Kirjo kauniiksi. Puiden rungot syntyivät ketjupistoin puuvillalangalla ja lehdet on tehty viivapistoin villasekoitelangalla. Kesken kirjonnan huomasin miten mustasta baskerista irtoaa väriä kirjoessa, joten pesin sen sillä riskillä, että myös jo kirjomani lanka saattaa värjäytyä. Onneksi puut säilyivät lähes lumenvalkoisina pesun jälkeenkin.

I gave this beret as a gift. A ready-to-wear bered got some embroidery additions to personalise it. The tree pattern is from the book Simply Stitched by Yumiko Higuchi. First I embroidered the tree trunks in cotton yarn. I noticed that some black dye smudged my fingers and after that I washed the whole hat in wool wash in washing machine. There was the risk that the white yarn would be dyed too, but luckily it took only a little dye. After a wash and dry I made the leaves with a thicker wool-blend yarn.

Joulutunnelmaa 1956 / 50s Xmas reading

Vuonna 1956 oli kulunut vasta reilu vuosikymmen sodasta, joten koruja neuvottiin tekemään esimerkiksi edullisista siemenistä ja höyhenistä. Joulunumerossa oli kuitenkin kulutusjuhlan tuntua myös, kun kahvi sekä alus- ja yövaatteet olivat mainonnan sisältönä.

This Finnish magazine from 1956 has Christmas-themed ads but also a reminder that the Second World War wasn't that long ago, as the jewelry recommendations were for beads and feathers instead of more expensive materials.

Sarvipäävillapaita / Stag head pullover

Tämä neulepaita on ollut työn alla pari vuotta. Malli on Norah Gaughanin Stag Head Pullover, joka ilmestyi Making-lehdessä vuonna 2016. Tilasin lehden heti mallin nähtyäni ja rupesin neulomaan sitä tummanvihreällä langalla. Palmikkokuviot tummalla pohjalla eivät kuitenkaan erottuneet kovin hyvin, joten vaihdoin vaaleampaan lankaan. Monivärinen lanka on Malabrigon Rios-lankaa värissä Arco Iris eli sateenkaari. Vaaleanvihreä lanka vartalo-osassa on Dropsin Big Merinoa. Noin kymmenen senttiä neulottuani jumiuduin kaikkine muutoksineni; tein tätä palasten sijaan pyöröneuleena, lisäsin muovihelmiä, improvisoin hihat ja jätin yksityiskohtia pois ja lisäsin toisia. Kun poimin paidan parin vuoden jälkeen, oli tämän Big Merino -päälangan pistaasinvihreän värisävyn valmistus lopetettu. Jouduin viimeistelemään yläosan ja tekemään hihat suunnilleen saman värisellä mutta ohuemmalla Drops Merino Extra Finella. Tietyssä valossa eri värjäyserien erot näkyvät. Puikkokoko 4 mm hihoissa ja 4.5 mm muuten.

This Stag Head Pullover by Norah Gaughan has been on my needles for over two years. I ordered an issue of the Making magazine just for this pattern in 2016. I started to knit it then in dark green yarn, but realized that the cables wouldn't show very well in dark yarn. So I restarted in multicoloured Malabrigo Rios in colour Arco Iris and then moved on to light green Drops Big Merino in colour pistachio. But I was making so many modifications (knitting in the round instead of pieces, adding beads, leaving out cables some place and adding them elsewhere), that I got stuck and shoved it into a bag for couple of years. When I picked it up again this December the pistachio coloured yarn had been discontinued. So I had to finish it with a thinner Drops Merino Extra Fine yarn. It is almost the same shade than the main body, but in certain light the differences between the dye lots show. The sleeves are knitted on 4 mm needles and the main body on 4.5 mm. I used around 12 skeins of yarn.

Pipo ja kynsikkäät samasta Drops Merino Extra Fine -langasta neulottuja viime vuonna. Kynsikkäiden alla olevat mustat hanskat lahjaksi saadut. Housut ja kengät uutena ostettuja.
The beanie and mitts are me-made. The black gloves under the mitts were a gift. The corduroy pants and shoes are bought as new. Though I waited until the last minute of a summer sale and got the pants for a fiver.
