Kesäpöksyt / Retro shorts and culottes

 

Nämä shortsit ompelin vuonna 2015 ja ne ovat edelleen lempikesäpöksyni. Toppi tansanialaisen ompelijattaren tekemä.

These patchwork shorts are me-made, and the African wax print top is tailormade by a Dar es Salaam seamstress.

Samalla shortsien ompelukaavalla kuin ylemmät palapöksyt kasasin nämä jämäkangashousut pääosin tansanialaisista kitenge-puuvillakankaista pari vuotta sitten. Neuletoppi on omatekoinen myös. Kassi käsityöläiseltä Turun keskiaikamarkkinoilta.

These culottes are sewn with the same shorts sewing pattern than the other shorts on top. I used scrap fabrics of Tanzanian kitenge cottons and added length to the pattern. The cotton knit top is DIY make too. Bag is handmade by an artisan and gotten from sort-of-a renaissance fair.

Punapiposeikkailija / Cousteau-Zissou cap

Puolesta kerästä punaista Alize Cashmira-lankaa syntyi pipo Lalla Pohjanpalon Jacques Cousteau pipo -ilmaisohjeella. Itselleni punainen pipo tuo mieleen tutummin Zissou-elokuvahahmon, joka myös liikkuu ja seikkailee maailman merillä Wes Andersonin Steve Zissoun vedenalainen maailma -elokuvassa, mutta nimi Cousteau tuo myös merellisiä mielikuvia. Punainen lanka ei riittänyt ihan loppuun asti, joten jatkoin oranssilla Cashmere Goldilla ja peitin huipun monivärisellä jämälankatupsulla. Puikkokoko 3.25 mm.

I had about half of a skein of red Alize Cashmira yarn, and I decided to make a Steve-Zissou-style cap with it. I used Jacques Cousteau Hat pattern that is by Finnish designer Lalla Pohjanpalo and is available for free. I'm vaguely familiar with the marine explorer Cousteau, but the fictional charater of Zissou from The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is more known red hat reference for me. The red wool that I had was't quite enough, so I topped the hat off with some orangey yarn. And I added a scrap-yarn pompom. Needle size was 3.25 mm.

Tupsutoppi / Tassel top

 

Tämä puuvillatoppi on yhdistelmä kolmea eri ohjetta; muoto on Jessie Maedin My Little Secret Crop -ohjeesta, raidat Lisa Mutchin Obverse-sukista ja yläosan kirjoneule Sea Glass Hat -ohjeesta, joka on Wool & Pine -suunnittelijoiden julkaisema. Lisäksi lisäsin etualareunaan lankatupsuja. Puikkokoko 4 mm ja langat puuvilla- ja puuvillasekoitelankoja. Viime kesänä tein samankaltaisen kevyen topin, joka sopii helteisille kesäkeleille todella hyvin.

I made a top that combines three different patterns; the shape is from My Little Secret Crop by Jessie Maed Designs, the striping is from Obverse by Lisa Mutch, and the stranded section on top is inspired by Sea Glass Hat by Wool & Pine. I also added tassels on the front hem to make the top extra festive. Yarns are cottons and cotton-blends and needle size was 4 mm.

Hame ja bikinitoppi on valmisvaatteita, raitainen putkikoru ranteessa omatekoinen, kaulakoru ja toinen rannekoru berliiniläiseltä Mauerpark-torilta ja aurinkoiset prahalaiselta käsityökäistorilta.

Last summer I made another cropped top with Jessie Mad Designs pattern and it is very comfy summer wear. This new top is combined with ready-to-wear skirt & bikini top, DIY armband, and the rest of jewelry and accessories being from craft fairs where artisans sell handmade products.

Kesäiset ruutukuosit / Summer plaids

Päivän asuna omatekoinen jämäkangastoppi, kirppishousut, äidin vanhat aurinkolasit ja isotädin maalaama silkkuhuivi.

Wearing a DIY top sewn with a 1960s or early 70s sewing pattern. Trousers are thrifted, silk scarf is hand-painted by great-aunt, and the sunglasses are mom's hand-me-downs.

Jämälankapiponen / Sea glass hat

Erilaisista jämä- ja purkulangoista syntyi tämä pieni Sea Glass Hat -ilmaisohjeella neulottu pipo. Ohje on Wool & Pine -suunnittelijaduon käsialaa. Puikkokoko 3.25 mm.

From scrap yarns I whipped up this little hat with Sea Glass Hat pattern that a free recipe by Wool & Pine. Needle size was 3.25 mm.

 

Lehtikuviokauluri / Leafy cowl

Tämä kauluri on lyhyt versio 'Colors of the Wind' Infinity Cowl -ohjeesta, joka on Tanis Grayn suunnittelema ja löytyy Knitting with Disney -kirjasta. Harmaa lanka on Lankavan Ullaa ja punertava liukuvärilanka on Novitan Usvaa. Puikkokoko 4.5 mm.

I made an autumnal neckwarmer with 'Colors of the Wind' Infinity Cowl pattern that is by Tanis Gray. It has been published in Knitting with Disney book. Yarns are wool-blends that are left-overs from previous projects, and needle size used for this was 4.5 mm.

Ryijyn lumoissa / Ryijy rug exhibition

 

Kävin Ryijyn lumo -näyttelyssä Kauhajoella nauttimassa kauniista taidonnäytteistä, väreistä ja ympäristöstä. Käsityön ystävänä yllä omatekoiset housut, neulepaita ja kaulakoru. Tuohilaukku käsityöläismyymälästä Pietarsaaresta. Loput asusteet ketjuliikkeiden hyllyistä.

Summer Finland has many exhibitions and museums that are open only in tolerable temperatures when Finns are more willing to venture outside. I went to see traditional Finnish Ryijy rugs in an old preserved farm house in Western Finland, in my home region. The textile art was in buildings and barns and showed beautiful techniques and colours that made for aesthetically exhilarating experience. To see handmade thigs I wore my handmade trousers, shirt and i-cord necklace.

Näyttelyesittelyistä opin, että ryijytekniikka matkasi mitä luultavimmin Lähi-idästä viikinkien matkassa Pohjolaan, jossa sillä saatiin aikaan lämmittäviä villatekstiileitä.

The technique of rug-making probably was brought to Finland from Middle East by the neighbouring Vikings. Here the warm wool textiles were practical and were further developed into unique textile art with local motifs.
