Uusvanhat farkut / Old and new denim

Vanhat lempifarkkuni alkoivat hajota, niissä oli reikiä takamuksessa ja nappi oli pompahtanut irti. Ompelin uudet farkut yhdistäen kankaita vanhoista vaaleansinisistä farkuista, kaksivärisestä vanhasta mekosta sekä uutta tummaa farkkukangasta, jota löytyi kirpparilta 4 eurolla metri. Ajattelin ensin ommella Palo-farkut Uuden kaavan mukaan -kirjasta, mutta farkut näyttivät liian kireiltä makuuni vaikka pidin eriväristen farkkukankaiden yhdistämisestä. Sen sijaan Burda Style -lehdessä 2/2019 löytyi suoralinjaiset housut, joiden ohjetta käytin muokaten. Etupuoli on siisti ja pääasiassa uutta kangasta polvipaikkoja ja vyötärökaitaletta lukuunottamatta. Takapuolella sen sijaan on tilkkuja. Vaalea farkkukangas on heikompaa, joten käytin sitä vähemmän kuluviin ulkosyrjiin. Takatasku on irrotettu sellaisenaan ja siirretty uuteen kohteeseen. Polvipaikat on vain leikattu ja reunat huolittelemmatta ja ne saavat rispaantua pesussa. Järkeilin, että reunojen kääntäminen tekisi polvistä liian jäykät.

My old favourite jeans had served for four years but had gotten holes and lost a button. So I made new jeans using the old ones, old denim dungarees and new dark blue fabric that I got from a thrift store for 4 euros per meter. At fisrt I was going to use the Palo jeans pattern from Named Clothing, but found them too tight, so I went for a smart pair of straight trousers from Burda Style 2/2019. The front side is pretty simple, but the party is on the backside where I went patchwork-crazy. That was definitely inspired by the Palo jeans. The backpocket and and heart-shaped knee patches are hand-stitched into place. The knee patches are just cut, so they should fray in wash. The zipper is re-used too from an old pair of pants and seemed sturdy enough for another round of use.

Noin 70-lukua / About sixty seventy

Neulepaita on 1960-luvulta ja löytyi Tukholmasta Americana-nimisestä liikkeestä noin 15 eurolla. Alla noin 70-lukulainen sinapinvärinen kirppismekko, jonka valmistaja on kotimainen jo toimintansa lopettanut Salonne Salosta. Eri vuosikymmenien ja tyylien sekoittaminen on helpompaa kun väreissä on jotain yhteistä.

The sweater is a genuine 1960s cheerleader sweater that I got from Stockholm for about 15 euros. When washing it, I took the C-letter out and washed just the sweater. That was to preserve the varsity insignia in good condition. And afterwards I stitched the letter back on. The dress underneath is thrifted and made in Finland as it's maker is Salonne from Salo. Even if the clothes are from different decades the colours hopefully pull the look together.

Tätityyli / Timeless style

Tämä merkkiä vailla ollut mekko löytyi kirpparilta joitain vuosia sitten muutamalla eurolla. Siinä oli isot pöyhkeät hihat, mikä viittasi 1980-luvun muotiluomukseen. Hihat leikkaamalla siitä tuli kuitenkin kevyempi ja ajattoman vintagehenkinen. Tyyliltäään se edustaa tätityyliä, joka muistuttaa isotädistäni. Isotätini pukeutui tyylikkäästi sävy sävyyn mekkoihin ja villatakkeihin lähes aina ja omakin tyylikkyyskäsitykseni perustuu paljolti häneen. Hän puolestaan kehitti tyylinsä ehkä 1950-luvulla toivuttuaan sodasta. Se pysyi aika lailla samana vuosikymmeniä. Tätityyli on ajattoman tyylikästä.

This dress is thrifted few years back for few euros and it was without labels. It had big 1980s style sleeves that I chopped off and now it looks more like airy 1930s style. This style reminds me of my great aunt who wore mostly dresses in similar style and length. She had been a nurse in the war and lost her fiancé there. Purple was her favourite colour and she wore dresses with matching cardigans and costume jewelry. My idea of style is largely based on her aesthetic that was formed probably around 1950s.

 The shoes are thrifted by my mom for 12 euros. Smart shoes are the basis of a granny or autie style, but they can have a touch of fun and everyday luxury, like these with gold colour.

 

Saraste-toppi / Frilly Saraste shirt

Ompelin Saraste-paidan kirjasta Breaking the Pattern, jonka ovat tehneet suomalaiset suunnittelijasiskokset Laura ja Saara Huhta, jotka tunnetaan ompelukaavayrityksestään Named Clothing. Tein paidasta ensin tämän koeversion, jossa testasin sopivinta kokoa itselleni ja sitä olisiko ohjetta muokattava omiin mittoihini. Totesin, että ohjeen mukainen levenevä paidanhelma ei sopinut minulle, joten kavensin ja lyhensin sitä. Tykky puuvilla pönköttää nimittäin liikaa. Toisaalta olkaröyhelöt ovat myös ryhdikkäitä tiiviistä puuvillasta ommeltuna. Ompelukaavakirjan lainasin kirjastosta ja se ilmestyi juuri suomeksikin nimellä Uuden kaavan mukaan.

The sewing pattern book Breaking the Pattern by Laura and Saara Huhta came out in the winter and I got to borrow it from the library. The designers are Finnish sisters who have a company called Named Clothing. The book has many cute clothes that have fun details. I decided to sew the Saraste shirt. This beige top is the wearable toile in which I tested the size and fit before cutting into the treasured fabrics that I have waiting in my stash. The original fit is loose and A-lined, which turned out to be too much for me, especially in this stiff quilting cotton. It was like a tent, so I slimmed and shortened my toile. The stiffness was an advantage with the shoulder ruffles though. The result is quite nice now and I plan to sew another version later.

Vuokko-mekko / Vintage Vuokko dress

Tämä Vuokko Nurmesniemen ruskea mekko löytyi SPR:n kirpparin alepäiviltä noin 3.5 eurolla. Se on täyttä villaa ja näyttää malliltaan ja tuotetietomerkiltään joko 1960-luvun loppupuolen tai 1970-luvun tuotteelta. Lisäksi yllä on rannekorut Marimekko-outletistä, sukkikset ja kengät ovat outlet-ostosia myös ja laukku kirppikseltä.

This brown dress looks like a late 60s or 1970s product byt its mod shape, colour and label details. It is made by Finnish Vuokko Nurmesniemi and I got it from Finnish Red Cross charity shop for 3.5 euros. It's made of 100% wool and the label recommends dry clean only. I washed it in cold water and delicate wash though even if it is risky and not recommendable due to the shrinking of wool. It turned out fine luckily. I wore it with bangles from Marimekko outlet and outlet shoes and stockings too. The bag is 2nd hand.

Matka-asu / Vintage travels

Ruskea on harvan suosikkiväri, joten sen värisiä vintageasusteita löytää edullisesti. Kengät ja laukun ostin muutamalla eurolla kirpparilta. Niiden ajallinen määrittäminen on vaikeaa, sillä kenkien tekstit ovat kuluneet pois, mutta arvelen niiden olevan 70-luvun tuotantoa, joka haki inspiraationsa 1930-luvulta. Myös hattu on vanha, mutta vaikea sanoa miten vanha, sillä valmistajan merkkiä siinä ei ole. 60-luvulla pienet hatut olivat muotia ja tämän materiaali on jonkinlaista keinokuitua. Matkalaukku on äidin kirppisostos jostain Pohjanmaalta ja aito Samsonite, jota joku on tuunannut jenkkikuvastoa liimaamalla. Mekko afrikkalaista kitenge-kangasta.

Many people find brown a musty old-fashioned colour, so brown accessories are cheap in second hand and thrift stores. I got both the shoes and hat for few euros each. The shoes must be 1970s-does-1930s reproduction as tehy are old, but not that old. The hat has no labels, but to my knowledge small hats were fashionable for example in the 60s. The material is artificial and not straw as you would expect with older hats. The Samsonite plywood trunk is bought by my mom and someone has decoupaged Americana-themed picures onto it. The dress is African kitenge fabric.
